Model railroading really is a social hobby, and many (if not most) model railroaders belong to clubs. It affords them the opportunity to be involved in a major model railroad, usually more than could be done by any individual at home.

The other part of it is just sitting around, shooting the breeze about this and that. Put two model railroaders in a room together, and they will talk for hours about nothing but trains. (not much fun for wives)

Heh! Talk about social hobbies, it reminds me of the years when I and my at then family of wife and three kids lived in Seattle -- we had a nice big spacious house -- a nice big garage, too, but I ran part of my business out of that so it wasn't living space. But for our big family room I decided on a nice ping pong table. I and a bunch of friends spent a lot of time together (they worked for me so were around most of the day) and we had lively ping-pong tournaments pretty often -- they were fun!

And then, for evening activities we'd often end up at another friend's house, who had a nice good quality pool table in his finished basement, so more hours of fun and games! A good time was had!

R/C Flying is very similar. For that matter full-scale flying enjoys a lot of hangar flying as well but it's usually reserved for those who own aircraft and spend their time at the airport like others might do at the golf course or the marina.

Ya'll are making me want to go back to Entertrainment Junction!

Never have gotten into modelling myself, but I know a few hardcore modellers. Last time I saw my friend Tom's set up he had run out of space in the one room so he built a tunnel through the wall and expanded into the next room :) Pastor of my church also has a basement that is dedicated to his set up.

I purchased a new locomotive for the home layout......I'm trying to act nonchalant while we have dinner, but I'm really dying to get in and run it.

I broke a rule I'd set for myself. I wasn't going to buy anything modern, and was only going to run 4-axle diesels, but this (external link) is the one locomotive that would make me go against that decision. Union Pacific took a group of SD70-ACe locomotives, and turned them out with custom paint jobs that are tributes to the railroads that have be swallowed by the UP. From memory: The Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Rio Grande, Chicago Northwestern, MKT, and Missorui Pacific were all honored with an engine in custom livery.

The SP engine is the most striking (IMHO). It uses a combination of the old Daylight colors as well as the Black Widow paint scheme of the 40's and 50's.

The model I bought is engine #1996, the Southern Pacific tribute engine. Since I'm primarily an SP modeler, it was a 'must have', even though it's all wrong for the era I model.

Do you have an SP GP9 painted in the Black Widow scheme? If you do, put the number 3873 on it and you could emulate real life...

Sounds a lot like ham radio...
