I just received my Elinchrom Ranger 1100 ws kit and it came in a plastic carrying case. I also ordered the Rotalux 69" softbox and am impatiently awaiting its arrival. In the meantime, I'm a bit nervous about carrying this kit around in the plastic case as it has plastic snap closures and I have visions of it opening during transport and spilling the flash head on to the ground. Should I just suck it up and spend the money on a better case? Or are these monsters in my head toothless?

Hi Sue,

I don't own that case but have seen numerous reports from people that do have it and while it's functional and can do the job, no one seems terribly pleased with the quality or durability of the case.

Many are using either Pelican or HRPC cases.

While I don't have Ranger RX case, I do have Quadra case which looks quite similar in photos to the big ranger case. It feels quite flimsy comparing the pelican nock off case I have. Most of the time its only to store the Quadra at home as it does not really fit more than the 2 head kit and the huge size is not very portable.

I would get a Pelican case, or a camera bag to carry it. :)

Rob is spot on; two weeks ago I switched my Ranger system from the Elinchrom case to a larger Pelican 1630 case which I believe is more functional. The Pelican case which I use with the padded divider set allows me to include the extra battery and lay out cables, grids, gels, Skyports etc in a more organized manner. I have found that the original Elinchrom case is a little cumbersome while the wheels on the Pelican case allow me roll the system into the shoot location.

Having said that, over the past year I did not have any problems with the original case from Elinchrom.

Yea, ditch the Elinchrom case, sell it on eBay. I had one for a VERY short while and thought it was terrible, ESPECIALLY for the price! Get yourself a Pelican and never worry again :)

I'd HIGHLY recommend buying the Kata 3-in-1 sling bag (size Large). It's truly perfect for the Ranger RX Speed AS with a freelite/ranger head. I recommended this bag to Mumbles (also known as Brendan), and he ended up buying the bag and writing a post/review/recommendation on it for this very reason. I'm sure if you do a search you'll find it.

It's not 100% protective like pelican case...but the ranger is built pretty darn strongly....and I'd much prefer a backpack that allows me to easily hike in with it. Additionally, my assistants love the bags...as it allows them to wear the ranger on their back when holding a lightpole (rather than relying on a shoulder strap).

EDIT: Found Mumbles post/pictures of that bag, HERE. He apparently stores his ranger horizontally in the bag, while I keep mine vertical (either way works just fine).

Thank you so much, this was very helpful! It just occurred to me that I have a huge Loweprowe backpack in mothballs somewhere, and I'm going to see if it can hold this stuff. Otherwise, I'm going for the Pelican case on wheels or that awesome Kata bag! Yay.

Yeah for me, we switch between the Kata and the Pelican 1560. In my opinion it's just the right size to squeeze two heads and a pack in. We use the Kata when we know we can't roll.

Great thread. I have been wanting to replace the case that came with my Ranger for quite some time. I will look into these suggestions.

Pelican 1510-1514

Ranger RX Speed AS (fits beautifully between the wheels), cable fits between generator and front, under Nano stand, charger is at the back under the Westcott double-fold umbrella, Ranger Free Lite 'A' head. Lid organiser holds Skyport Ranger receivers, Skyport adaptor, various fuses, sync adaptors. Will also have a Skyport Tx once I get my dud one replaced.

Quadra bag.

1 - 3 x 'A' head
2 - 4 x batteries
3 - 2 x generators
4 - 3 x standard leads
5 - charger, skyport
6 - deflectors
7 - deflector rods

In front pocket - 2 x Quadra softbox adaptors, 1 x small Quadra Portabox softbox (40cm x 40cm?)

Bag is a Lowepro Computrekker AW+ Roller or something. Don't like it much, which is why it's been demoted to carrying lights.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

Thanks for that, Mickeyjuice, exactly what I needed to see. The Loweprow backpack that i have is quite large but I think too much heavy stuff in it will be damaging to the straps etc. I am heading to Samy's today to look at pelican cases. THanks!

Nice, Juice. Looks like the 1510 is the perfect bag for the Ranger RX AS kit. :)

I bought myself the 1614 figuring I'd be able to carry two Ranger RX AS packs in there. I can but guess what? It's too heavy to lift with two packs in there. :| :o

Yeah, it's like it's designed for it.

Indeed, I struggle enough with the one...
