So unpacking my bag I placed my camera on the table.

The camera decided it preferred the look of the floor.

The floor decided it did not like the look of nifty #2.

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

There does not seem to be any broken bits of plastic, it only looks like the front piece has just become unclipped.

As it is not worth sending it away for repair as a new replacement would be cheaper, is it possible for me to reunite the two parts?

I can see how the clips align, but not how to put them together other than by pushing down and applying pressure, which I am worried will then snap the plastic clips.

Comments, bribes, criticism, bribes, irrelevant anecdotes, and bribes always welcome.
EXIF is available inside all my photos, though bribes are still recommended anyway.

Do a search here, people have put the nifty fifty back together again

this hapened to me a few months ago. whilst inspecting it out on site some little plasitic "part" fell out and rolled down between the windscreen and bonnet of my car! But still i had nothing to loose and kept putting the thing together trying all different ways and finally it kind of clipped in and i think activating the focus mechanism pulled it in to its rightful spot. Seems to be working fine,,,,,so keep trying. remember, if its gona come out easy then its gona go back easy too!

Looks like a piece is broken off inside the lens at the 1 O'clock? It was probably a clip that held the front of the lens in place.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Mine did the same and I put it together, but it did take some "fiddling." It wasn't really obvious how to "snap" it back, but I kept at it until it happened. I do have to say that I lost the AF after the break, but it's been working fine (image-quality-wise) ever since the accident (I dropped mine down the basement stairs!) I plan to keep it 'til the bitter end! :)

Those are really useful, thanks. Sounds like it should be painless, and I cannot do much worse to it now. Will give it a clean and try this evening.

time to get the 1.4

VAT (sales tax) goes up at the end of the year so I am thinking maybe the timing is trying to tell me something!

Even if I can fix it, I think I will still get the 1.4 now. Besides, getting a third nifty (#1 had several bounces on concrete, though still works part-time with a reverse adapter) would have meant spending as much as the 1.4 so seems a false economy.

Hate to criticize anyone here, but why is it at least once a week somebody drops their camera or lens? I've been shooting for 40+ years, and have yet to drop a camera or lens. Am I overly careful? Hardly. Lucky? Don't think so. I Just watch what I do!

Although, with the number of "nifty fifty" lenses popping apart growing on a minute-by-minute basis, it seems this particular lens will pop apart if a cloud passes overhead. It's about as impact resistant as a light bulb!

I actually slipped on my stairs with camera in hand and 50 on camera and down it went. I was more worried about my camera and am glad that the lens took the brunt of it (and that it wasn't a more expensive one), but you are right -- I've never dropped my camera before or since!

+1 with richardfox...perhaps there will be much of a demand for the nifty's that it might sell them for $50..so folks, let's keep 'em droppin :D

I tried following the advice in the post DreDaze linked, and, well, it seemed to work. Just going around the barrel and pressing down it eventually clipped together.

The focussing ring is rather stiff now, though not unusably so, but otherwise it looks and feels as good as it did before.

The real test will come tomorrow when I can take some test shots in daylight to properly see how it focuses. Auto-focus seems to work, though I am a little resigned to it being off. Surely it must have become misaligned?

But even if it means having to manually focus I will be happy. And I am set on getting the 1.4 regardless anyway.

Yeah...time for the 1.4.

I had people telling me I should get the 1.8 because it's such a great lens for the money, but I've heard horrible stories about it breaking or even becoming stuck onto the camera body and having to be sent to Canon to be removed.
