What's the difference between sending the camera back to Canon as opposed to sending it to a certified Canon repair shop?

I need to return my Canon EOS 300D because it shut off and will not turn on. I took camera back to BH where I purchased camera last Christmas. BH Canon Sales Rep took a look at the camera, placed another battery in it but it still did not turn on. Camera was never dropped, it was always carried in camera bag though I went shutterbug crazy as soon as I got the camera and shot pictures every week.

Also, I'm looking for advice on how to best package the camera back to Canon.

Do I need to send wires, battery, battery charger back as well?.

I have alot of pictures in my CF card and don't want to loose any images. Should I send it with a CF card.

Send it to either of these 2 addresses:

Factory Service Center Locations:
Canon Factory Service Center
100 Jamesburg Road Jamesburg,
NJ 08831 (732) 521-7000

Canon Factory Service Center
15955 Alton Parkway
Irvine, CA 92718 (949) 753-4000

Don't send in the CF card or extras with just the camera, just a note describing what is wrong. I have always gotten great service from the NJ facility but I live in Mass. and it is the closer one to me. Send in the receipt with the camera and it should be covered under warranty.

For heavens sake, call Canon. They will tell you which location is best for repair work. They will tell you which pieces you should include.

If you call Canon tech support and they try and help you through your problem, if they cannot fix your problem over the phone, they will tell you where to send it and what to send to them. I'd ship it in the original box that you should have saved, putting that box in a larger box with paper packing.

As a wild shot, does the 300D have a lithium battery for keeping the cam memory (time etc). Have you tried removing that and the main batt at the same time? Just for grins you might want to give it a try.

Along with removal and reinstalling the lithium coin cell as suggested, remove the CF card and try powering on the camera without the CF card installed. And while you have the CF card out, using a CF card reader, transfer your images from the CF card to your PC. If the camera still doesn't power up, with the CF card remaining out, I'd make one last attempt by removing the main battery for a few minutes, reinstall, and try one more power on. Failing this, it's time to call the Canon support folks for help.

Megapixels and high ISO are a digital photographers heroin. Once you have a little, you just want more and more. It doesn't stop until your bank account is run dry.
