This is not for me, but for my boss.
I already made a White box for him and
setup all the lights. So that part is already
covered.

He's budget is around $500 or so.
I need some advice cause I don't want him
to get an expensive tool that won't see much
work.

I do shoots for him but it came to the point where
he needs to do it on his own cause of my schedule
and the drive to his place.

Thanks,

with that budget a 20d and a used MF macro with the CF and some kind of editing software should be around 500-600

Any Canon DSLR would be fine with paired with a proper lens, a macro or telephoto lens should work depending on how large the objects are.

Even an 18-55 IS would do a decent job. Any APS-C EOS later than the 10D would suffice.

Get him the Sony NEX3 w/ 18-55mm lens kit. Don't waste money on a dslr for this one time effort.

Sonhy's nex3 has full size 14.2mp hd aps-c sensor, easy to use like a point and shoot and will give him a reason to use after this one time even. He can use it like a point and shoot and take it almost anywhere. Can fit in the pocket and take better quality shots then the D5000. Great little all around camera with high quality shots.

For that kind of photo shot where everything os controllable,
I agree with this comment

I would suggest G12 or something will be more than enough,
But sony nex probably better, sony great on this field
