IS noise

I just bought a 70-200 f/4L IS on here a few days back.

The IS makes a distinct clicking sound when it comes on and turns off. Also a gentle shake of the lens reveals a subtle rattle inside the lens.

Can someone put my mind at ease and tell me both phenomena are normal?

Thanks!

I don't have that lens but IS noise is normal for many lenses with IS. I don't know about the rattle, I never shake my lenses, lol.

I'm sure it's fine. IS can make clicks turning on + off, and some rattles inside a lens aren't unusual.

I have owned this lens and it is normal to hear that distinct clicking sound as the IS turns on and then shuts off. Don't worry about it. Enjoy the lens!

From what I have read I wouldn't be too worried about the IS noise, but as for the rattle.... I suggest you package it up and send to me for evaluation...

note: evaluation times may vary

All lenses have a rattle if you shake them hard enough. Some slight, some very noticeable. The 100L IS Macro has quite a pronounced rattle when held upright and gently shaken. Again, perfectly normal as the IS mechanism in that lens is actually mounted on ceramic balls for the hybrid function to work smoothly.

I wish that everyone who got a lens with Is would at least test one first to understand that it's not broken and it is loud. I had this issue when I sold mine to a fellow member here and they complained the IS was broken and too noisy and wanted a refund. It was a frustrating situation and I'm not blaming the buyer but when I got it back, I went straight to the local shop to test it wit the other 70-200L there and it sounded EXACTLY the same! Here's the thread and congrats on an awesome lens. I loved mine!

I hear ya...I have used them before, but I guess I didn't ever hear that distinctive click on/off or the slight rattle. I just wanted to be sure everything was OK...and now I am. It's a lot of money to spend on a used item...

you can always turn IS off just to make sure...it shouldn't make a noise when IS is off...if it does...well you've probably got an issue...

Don't get me wrong, I don't blame you for asking. It is definitely a big purchase which is why I was ok with refunding it back to the buyer in the first place. I just hope that any potential buyers will read this and not freak out when they get it. hell, even I freaked out when I got it haha

Yeah, I turned IS off and it focuses normally. And I agree...if IS is off and your lens clicks...probably not a good thing.
