Hello guys,
I have a question regarding picture styles that is present on canon d-slr's
Until now i have been using "Standard" style. Does any one use custom styles on the camera or do you guys just take care of the settings during PP , same with White Balance ?? i do realize it is based on the light conditions at that point in time...but still...

the reason i ask is, most of the time when i try to shoot sunrise / sunsets...i end up with flat colors [pretty much like a painting . eg:- https://photography-on-the.net …63630&highlight=trying+to].....most of the shots i have seen here are pretty eye catching and gripping color wise...i am missing out on something for sure....will be experimenting again this weekend. I would really appreciate if you can shed some light on this. :)

cheers

Hi Bhanu - a lot of folks use picture styles to great satisfaction.... it's pretty much a matter of taste and aesthetic opinion IMO. I've never used them myself, shooting every in RAW. Most of my social event and fine are work tends to be across a broad range of color temperatures and I prefer to set the final WB myself.

If the work involves bridal/portrait photography then I will be trying to achieve faithful "whites" and "gray tones." Typically I will have included a WB card of some sort in a "calibration" image. If I'm doing urban landscape/fine art, then my WB tastes are open to wide interpretation as well as individual exposure/brightness/saturation actions I will perform on various adjustment layers. In that case the picture style would pretty much be blown away by my PP efforts. - Stu

If you shoot in JPG and find yourself wanting more contrast and saturation in some situations just bump up the contrast and saturation in a "user defined" picture style and use that when you shoot JPG in those situations. They work nicely in JPG shooting.

You should try shooting RAW or RAW + JPG and experiment with RAW. It's a good way to get WAY better images. You can set WB in post processing.
