Pied Heron's are just wonderful looking when they have their nuptial plumage.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Stephen, not that I know of, as far as I know they are only normally found at the very top coastal parts of Western Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. They do come quite a ways down the Queensland coastline so you may see the odd ones about in the extreme northern N.S.W coastline.

Both with the Bigma (Sigma 50-500 DG), I really love that lens. I pretty much only use 2 lenses at the moment, the Bigma and the Tamron SP-90Di. Both shots were at 500mm, handheld, iso 800 at around f10-11 and most likely a shutter speed of around 1/800-1/1000 I think.

Two superb shots of the pied heron. We don't get them around here, but plenty of white-faced and white-necked herons though.

ladybelle, I'm really enjoying this lens. It is good value for the range/reach, you will get the hang of it with use just keep at it. I'm not sure if it gets easier or just that my muscles go numb with the pain lol, but you do get used to it.

Steve, have the white-faced herrons over your way got the nuptial plumage yet ? I think most herons and egrets look just stunning at that time of year.

Well I can't really say I've taken that much notice. Next time I get close to one I'll check !
