My sister was testing makeup on me once again, I tried selective colour and smoke combined.

One continuous light bulb and soft box directly infront of me.

I see a lot of bad selective color attempts. This one makes up for all of them. Beautiful work.

powerful work, ryan, love the vignetting in the corners - i'm fascinated by the set up shots... darn it; final results make me want to go out and get some equipment!

thanks for postin such inspiring work!

 Thanks.

Ryan, you are in a great groove! You've become a real inspiration for me - everyone always says "aim high", so as I learn and practice, I'm aiming to try to be as good as you are. Thanks for the set-up info - that always helps greatly!

You can always ask me for setup. I don't post the strobist info anymore. It's become to much of a hassle to record it for every shot, and I've got to the point to where I don't need to for myself. But if anyone asks I have no problem telling them. It's just become repetitive for me to type it out every photo I do.

This girl has a lot of potential. I think you should do more work with her.
Different wardrobe and different location. She will do good things.

Hey Greg, I would try to boost up the power of the flash so that you can use a faster shutter speed. The image seems a bit soft and I'm assuming it's because of camera shake with the 1/60 shutter speed. Besides that a little bit of white balance fix (seems a bit yellow on my monitor) and you got yourself a good portrait.

In order to do that, youd have to boost the flash power and use a larger f stop, right? Shutter speed has no affect on flash exposure under max sync speed (not sure what it is on a d90 but its around 1/200th) Anyway, you can raise the flash power one stop and then three clicks up on the aperture should give you the same exposure, only with just a bit more depth of field. It would be easier to just up the ISO and lower the flash power and use a higher shutter speed. :D

at the time i had trouble focusing with the 1.8, since that pic I have learned to use a higher shutter speed for sharpness. I sharpened it in PP but it got softer when i embedded it. check the link

Yeah Im not feelin the white balance, was a pain to fix in PP, plus i think my monitors colors are off. thanx

You are right. But since he was shooting 1/60s, the shutter speed will help expose the shot up to around 1/200 depending on the camera. After that, aperture can be used to correct aperture if needed but if you want a specific aperture for a certain DOF, you can adjust the flash power to fix exposure.

Maybe you know this already but just getting it out there for Greg in case he doesn't know. :)

Ive figured that out about a month or so ago, by reading the info on thread pics and flickr (including yours.. good stuff), and seen shutterspeeds between 125-200 sec. my little sb600 can be a pain but im investing in alienbees for more power.
