I love these BTS shots. Do you guys use UV filters when shooting at a beach? I hear its to protect the lens from salt water and other things in that environment.

Ive figured that out about a month or so ago, by reading the info on thread pics and flickr (including yours.. good stuff), and seen shutterspeeds between 125-200 sec. my little sb600 can be a pain but im investing in alienbees for more power.

With time and patience, you will not only learn a lot about lighting but you will also get the chance to invest in better lighting. I'm still in the process of learning and investing. And thanks, the 3 studio portrait sets were shot the same week I got my new AB800 strobe.

Won't shoot without one regardless. Protects my element on a daily basis. Not a happy camper if my 2400 dollar 85L gets messed up!

Been follwing you and pham for a while, ryan. You guys are the reason I signed up and started posting. I gotta question for you though. On these shoots how many shots of these models do you take to get those few amazing portfolio pics?

Tawcan, nice headshot. You can actually see the photographer (probably), in front of the umbrella/octobox :p

That's very common in a lot of glamour work. The photographer stands directly in front of a very large light source. I do it all the time.

Not a problem.

You do this to get shadowless lighting? Is it basically like using a ringlight?

Yes. Very soft, even lighting. Not really a ring light effect. Even large ring lights aren't that huge and if you worked close to a wall or background you would get a very definite shadow/glow around the edge from a ring. The large octa doesn't do that. Instead you get a very soft, diffused, shadow that is barely seen.

at the time i had trouble focusing with the 1.8, since that pic I have learned to use a higher shutter speed for sharpness. I sharpened it in PP but it got softer when i embedded it. check the link

Yeah Im not feelin the white balance, was a pain to fix in PP, plus i think my monitors colors are off. thanx

just out of curiosity... you've got a 1.8 ... why ISO 500? ( was it in a darker room?).

Besides WB, for me the picture came across just a tad bit "too close"...seems I had to "work" to see the whole photo. Otherwise a nice portrait, indeed.

color a little off on 1st one... I like the composition and lighting (kind of a, "im here to play ball" sports lighting feel to it). But crop out the distracting background light.

2nd one, color much better, but I'm not sure the story you're telling me, though... is it the background or is it you; or even the subject to your right? (seems leaning to the left makes me wonder what you're trying to make sure gets into the photo).
Nice snapshot, indeed, though.
