Hey guys, I'm new to the hot-shoe flash game and was curious what is mean't by "taking it (the flash) off camera". Are you bouncing the flash off a wall, card, etc...? Or actually mounting it off-camera? How do you ensure the flash fires correctly based on the camera settings if it is mounted elsewhere?

Yes, it helped me out as well. More specifically check out the Lighting 101 article

Basically you put a transmitter on the hot shoe of your camera and you mount your flash to a receiver that has a similar hot shoe and the signal is sent either through a cable or wireless. It can get more complicated with different features and ranges, but that's the basics
