My first attempt at lighting, not a human :D

QUOTED IMAGE

looks nice.... the white letters are a tad bit over exposed - I cant see the texture of the plastic. Otherwise nice!

Thanks. Any idea how I can fix this? if I power down the flash, the rest of the lens cap gets too dark :/

Just waiting for my invite

I told you all you have to do is ask. I shoot almost everyday.

I shoot this in the socal sun with a stop filter. Sun was at f/13.1

Nice shot Scott. Funny how the last few days I've seen a lot of bare quadra shots. I was only thinking to myself last week to ditch most of the modifiers and go bare for a while. Frank Doorhorf is always talking about using his quadras with the standard reflectors.

actually, the pic looks nice to me. But it depends what look you're trying to go for.

  • if you're wanting to see more of the grain of the TAMRON letters, put the flash closer to 180degrees with the surface of the letters and move the light back just a couple inches.
  • You could always balance the natural light with the flash illumination closer to 50/50, but then, I think you'd lose the beauty of the deep dark blue hues of the background.
  • You could even try something a bit out of the box, keep the flash where it was, put a white paper towel over the head of the flash, and voila... a differnt but pleasingly lit capture.

Of course, I'm no expert, but those are just some of the fun things I've tried in tryin to capture 'inanimate objects'.

There's plenty of folks in the lighting threads who I might consider experts, but in the end, i've found that as long as you're able to capture what you've envisioned in your mind's eye, then you're on the right track to perfect lighting....

thanks for posting it up! Keep having fun!

Outstanding! Seriously. The light is so soft, at first I assumed this was natural light. I'm really curious what light modifier/s were used here?

I'm not taking a direct shot at anyone, but when you quote peoples pictures, is it that hard to just remove the URL from the quote? I'm sick of seeing the same sets on a page 5times.

Edited. Happy now?

Gotta watch where you stand these days - might drown in tears. :P

Sometimes, if you see shots on another page in the thread it helps to bring them over to the new page so everyone knows what photos you're talking about but I agree, quoting photos just after they're posted is a bit of a drag. I'm guilty of it too but I'm getting better at not doing that.

Shampoo sounds like an unfortunate name for a hair product.
You're a ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton made from stardust, riding a rock, hurtling through space. Fear Nothing!

If your really need to kick the suns ass a bare quadra will do it. Your killing hard light with hard light. In science they always said two negative will make a positive.

bare quadra at full power in Australian midday sun (Self Portrait) taken at 12:59pm even though exif will say 1:59pm. Almost straight out of camera, just cropped and resized for web.

Thanks for the tips. I've never really thought about adding a towel, I shall try that, thanks.
