Here's my latest. Elinchrom 600RX with a DIY beauty dish and a shower curtain diffuser. Still trying to find something a bit bigger for a softer light but am undecided on what to get.

RJ,
The shower curtain may not be offering much diffusion. Depends on its density.
Also, modifier offer more gradual shadow transitions when they can wrap the light around the subject.
A good rule of thumb is twice the diagonal or diameter. So, at the distance you shot this it would have to be a really big modifier.

You have a nice balance between the ambient and the strobe.
For this type of setting the harder shadow edges are fine in my opinion.

I would have tried to frame the shot so the dark tree branch wasn't pressing down on her head. :-)

Should have moved to my right a couple feet then that tree branch wouldn't be in there. Oh well, live and learn. Yea for what I do I usually do I don't need a whole bunch more softer, just a touch. I put the shower curtain over it to knock down power of the strobe, it's more like an opaque white so it eats up some light and I feel spreads it out a bit more.

Nice one Geoff.
Man, sun that close to the horizon is like 5:30a. How did you get her out that early?
Or maybe she hadn't made it to bed yet. :-)
What were you using on your Eli? BD or just a reflector?

David, I was up at 2am, for 3am chair for hair and makeup. We were on the beach at 4:50am. I used various modifiers over the course of the shoot but here I was using a 33" shoot-thru. 500 Bxri on a vag mini.

Nice job. I like the light from the shoot-thru.

The sun seems to move really fast when its that close to the horizon doesn't it? Creates a sense of urgency.

the light changed drastically in about 10 mins time. Once it rose completely over the horizon, it was a whole new game.

I was never much of an umbrella guy before, but I'm really warming up to it. The only bad thing with the shoot thru is depending on how close I am to the umbrella, I get some flare. A nice octo or reflective umbrella and no flare! or an assistant to hold a gobo
