When you open a raw file in DPP, do you see the same RAW Histogram as in the following pic ? I mean do you have 2 gray columns in each side and do they have the same size as in the pic below ? or is the white surface wider ? Thanks.

tonylong ...winded More info | Dec 09, 2010 17:22 | #2 Well, my 5D Classic and 1D3 both have the gray stripes, although on both the left edge of the right stipe, where the white point line starts (by default) is a bit more to the right. Tony

Dec 09, 2010 20:51 | #5 I think it's camera related. Each sensor has it's own dynamic range. The wider white surface, the higher dynamic range. Best DPP Threads

Based on my extensive, long-term experience and knowledge of how all these things work, I feel pretty sure that I don't have a clue!

The 5D looks the same. The 40D is a bit lower at the top end compared to the 5D/5DII. The 7D is similar to the 5DII/5D. Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

The gray represent hard stops or areas that are invalid. Signals close to white have higher resolution (more steps per zone, Ansel Adams zone system) than signals close to black.

Dec 10, 2010 01:39 | #14 tonylong wrote in post #11426516 I loaded my histogram to the new thread... Heh! I had a hilarious time accomplishing that simple task, though -- simple, as long as I can look back and chuckle at my trials and adversities !I've been working with my little laptop, which does have DPP but doesn't have Lightroom or Photoshop, it does not have an editor I'm familiar with -- Paint has been "remodeled" for Win7 (maybe Vista) and doesn't have the old familiar Windows menus, just toolbars that seem to change around willy-nilly... And, a while back the battery-powered wireless mouse I had been using died, so I decided to make myself get used to using the fingerpad, which I hate because it always does crazy stuff I don't want, but I've been toughing it out, not changing any settings and only disabling it when I'm typing out something and I can't afford it going crazy on me (learned by experience). So, bumbling through getting my screenshot open in Paint, cropped and sized and saved, and then using the Attach function here, all with the finger pad doing its usual crazy stuff...hilarious... Thanks for the effort ! Best DPP Threads

Attached is from a 5D2. The 40D shows the same shift. The gray zone then is a graph buffer (and hard stop) and the white zone represents actual potential resolution and distribution of data. One graph many cameras hence the shifts.
