In another thread I have noticed that the DPP RAW histogram gives information about the dynamic range of a camera. It seems the surface of the white area changes from one camera to another. I suppose that the wider the white surface is, the higher the dynamic range. So it would be nice to collect here all DPP RAW Histograms for each canon camera model, so we can compare their own dynamic range. So could you please post a small screen shot of the DPP raw histogram for you camera if it is not already posted ? Thanks.

Apparently the Digital Rebel (300D) can get less information in the highlights than the 5D

And the 1D-Mark II can get more information in the highlights than the 5D.

It does'nt matter. It's just to compare the width of the white surface. I suppose that cameras that have a wider white surface have also a higher dynamic range.

I don't understand what your looking for. You just want screenshots of DPP histograms or are you really interested in the DR of the different sensors. If it's the latter maybe a review site such as DxO might be a better source since they have a repeatable process they use to calculate DR.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

That depends on scale. This is a graph from a software tool. The 5DII histogram scale looks identical to all the other histograms here.

The screenshots I have posted are all from the same version of DPP running on the same machine, using the same graphics card, with the same screen resolution, but you can see there are differences in the width of the white surface. So I don't think it's a question of scale. I think DPP (canon developers) knows the right range for each camera model and display it consequently...

Hmm.. it looks pretty consistent with DXO's dynamic range numbers. Except DXO shows the 7d with a higher DR than the 1dII.. but DPP shows them about the same

Edit: just saw the 5dii ^^... I don't think it's consistent. Does ISO affect the spacing?

It's interesting -- the gray "zones" set a "hard stop" for both the white points and the black points, so that is where clipping will begin in either direction, and there does seem to be a slight difference from camera to camera. And, you evidently can't budge it, it's "fixed" for each camera.

So, I wonder if Canon has something about this in a White Paper?

Too bad we don't get the same thing in the RGB panel -- it would be fun to compare jpegs with Raws using this tool!
