I'm starting to shop for a shoulder bag which I can use as a day bag w/a gripped 20D and a 100-400mm lens. I'd like to be able to keep the lens mounted on the camera while stored in the bag and some storage for small random items (cards, batteries, etc.). I'm mostly going to be using it when shooting at the beach (surfing) so short hikes will be the norm.

I'm a little overwhelmed by the amount of bags so I'd thought I'd get some direction from the group....any suggestions?

I've heard the Domkes are good for a large lens attached to the body with just some accessories thrown in. I'm curious what others say though. I don't own a Domke for the record.

Take a look at the ThinkTank Retrospective 20. I think it will hold what you are listing.

Yup, I carry one of these, and it will for sure hold what you need it to. Great bag too, and pretty good size, just in case you want to carry more than just that combo.

I have stuffed a gripped 40d or gripped xti with a 100-400 in a ThinkTank UD50 before, but when you add a 1.4xTC it gets a little tall for the zipper to close.

Even though a Sling bag, the Tamrac Velocity 9X can hold my 7D gripped with 100-400 attached.

Thanks all for the info and it gives me a better starting point on what to look for. The Think Tank bags might just do the trick and will start researching.
