Well,
I got a 20D!
I really love it! First pic tonight, after I got home from work, was of this Junco--sun almost down--just filtering throught the trees. Tried out ISO 1600--then one pass of Neat Image. Should have had the 100-400 on--oh well...here he is anyway.

Nice Capture.. love the low angle sunlight, and the framing is great.

hate to ask.. but as I am also trying to figure out the noise reduction thing... and it's associated side effects...

.. where does the red come from on the edges of the bright grass stalks??

I've seen the deep purple from chromatic aberation, i've seen the bright blue from over sharpening, but never noticed the red edges before.

thanks..
.. Lee

Lee,

Thanks for the observation. I hadn't taken time to notice it.
I went back and looked at the original--with no correction at all--the red is there on the original too.
The light was very warm colored and just one beam illuminating the bird. So I don't know-it appears just to be shadow- It is only on the bright dry colored stalks--not on anything else.
I'll post a crop of the grass later when I get a chance.

Thanks!

don't know if I should be thanked.. but you're welcome!! :)

the reason I'm curious is because I had a fit over Chromatic Aberation on another camera.. and before I bought a big lens.. an L or a Bigma... I was researching the quality.

I had a similar discussion in this thread too... which turned out to be Sharpening effect.

If it is a trick of the light... Cool!!
if it isn't.. someone else will know about it I'm sure.

Hi Lee,
Here is a 100% crop of part of the image. I did not do anything to this, but adjust the exposure a little. It has not been sharpened at all.
Now, I am curious! Maybe someone can give an explanation of this.

Very nice shot.

The red does look like Chromatic Aberration - the "halo" or "fringing" is a give away. Given that it's red I'm thinking that it's going to be difficult to fix. Do you have PS CS or CS2? The RAW editor does a very good job of correcting CA (though this looks extreme). I did a little tutorial on using ACR to correct CA: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=48830

More (in-depth) info on CA can be found here: http://www.panotools.info …itle=Chromatic_aberration (external link)
This article also lists a program called PTShift that can correct extreme CA.

Hi,
Yes, I just downloaded the trial version of CS2 and was trying the Raw editor on this--and your, right--it would not be easy to fix.
I had shot this both at ISO 400 and ISO 1600--and both showed the red CA.
This is the first time I have seen it show up in my images that I have recognized--but this really was an extreme lighting condition.
I might try it again tonight--and see what I get.

Thanks for the tutorial--I'm going to read up on it!

Hi Bonnie,
Congratulations on your new camera! I wish I had Lee's keen eyes... I would have never noticed the AC. Your photo looks great. I can't believe your picture is that sharp without any sharpening!
