Am gonna be in Philly over the holidays, and am interesting in purchasing locally vs over the internet so I can test run a wide prime before I actually jump (looking at sigma 24, 28, 30, and Canon 28). Anyone have any store recommendations for places with reasonable prices?

They're pretty much in line with BH and Adorama, in my experience.

Good to know. I priced a lens a couple of years ago and they were over $200 more than Adorama and B&H. I only live about 15 minutes away and would love to have a local shop. I'll check them out again. I wish they were open later on most nights.

He'll do a certain amount of wheeling and dealing if he can. It's entirely possible that if you go in there and just ask for a price, you won't get the best he can do.

+1 to this too. Got my 7D there for $1300, it was demo'd (<100 clicks), and my 400 5.6 for $1100 new.

Some accessories are priced a bit high. I bought a CF card when I got the 7D only to find I could have got it alot less on Amazon, but I did care too much because Allen through in a Canon battery for like $20.

All great accolades . . . any second options, as this would be 45 minutes from where I'm staying (and probably more knowing traffic . . .)?

That would work much better. I've ordered a lens from them once online . . .

I think Columet's pretty much straight retail... you have a chance of doing better at Allen's. Unless it's on sale at Columet's.

Thanks for the advice. I'll need to weigh all the factors for sure, and people loving a store definitely factors in. However, I also have to factor in my family's schedules over the holidays and how much I can negotiate what could be a 2+ hour trip (both ways plus in-store time) - Location can be everything, as they say. . . .

Calumet is 5 minutes away from the IKEA where I often meet up with a Jersey friend of mine, while I have no secondary excuse to go to Levittown . . . and a quick search of prices on Calumet seem to indicate that they're on par with Amazon/adorama/bh, which seems reasonable.
