I photographed these guys once up here and they weren't the most willing participants. This one looks like a female though, did you see the mate?

Always find it strange how they stop still or just sit when you get too close to them rather than run/fly away. Do you still get alot of them around your area ? I know theres pleanty around Cairns. EW.

I ended up emailing a bird watcher for identification of mine because I had no idea what species they were. Only ever seen the one mating pair up at Boreen Point here and after a quick google I found out they were known to people researching them. Never got right into reading the information but they must be fairly close to being threatened. I was surprised too when they didn't flee as I approached, the submissive one just sank down into the reeds and the other stood it's ground and literally growled at me lol

I have family up there and they had 7 in their backyard only the other afternoon. They are mostly active of a night, you don't normally see alot of them during the day. Cheers Wayne
