This is a wonderful bird, quite large also reaching upto almost 60cm. Once found all over Australia near open woodlands and waterways is now almost extinct where I live . It still lives quite well in the north, but it's normally only seen when it's dark out.

haha did it make aggressive noises? I photographed these guys once up here and they weren't the most willing participants. This one looks like a female though, did you see the mate?

Nope, it was totally quiet. No mate about to be seen either. Always find it strange how they stop still or just sit when you get too close to them rather than run/fly away. Do you still get alot of them around your area ? I know theres pleanty around Cairns.

Not a lot around Cairns, sometimes hear them at night, I had a pair nesting near home when I was on tablelands, Hen lays 2 eggs on open ground and thats where She sits, they used to stand and sit near front gate and wouldn't move even when close to them, its the dogs they don't like. EW.

Good pictures too. I ended up emailing a bird watcher for identification of mine because I had no idea what species they were. Only ever seen the one mating pair up at Boreen Point here and after a quick google I found out they were known to people researching them. Never got right into reading the information but they must be fairly close to being threatened. I was surprised too when they didn't flee as I approached, the submissive one just sank down into the reeds and the other stood it's ground and literally growled at me lol

Very nice capture. I love the composition in 2.

Sorry to hear they're becoming scarce where you are.

Strange you say theres not many in Cairns, I heard just a couple of days ago theres quite a few. I have family up there and they had 7 in their backyard only the other afternoon. They are mostly active of a night, you don't normally see alot of them during the day.

Thanks again everyone for the comments.
