When I set it to RAW the image on the camera screen is very soft looking. Then I will take the same shot with the same settings only in JPEG and the image is tack sharp????? Is this normal?

By screen, do you mean the LCD or your computer screen?

Typically, JPEG is processed with sharpening applied, while raw little or no sharpening applied.

Try taking the same picture with same settings to both and posting.

If you are talking about the camera screen, then it's possible the camera is only displaying a compressed low res preview and not the full res of the RAW file. It's because the RAW files are HUGE data wise, and a .jpg is a much smaller file. At least, that's what happens on my G9.

RAW images must be processed to include sharpening for focus.

I just got a G12 for my wife last week and I noticed the same thing too. I set it to P mode and, with the few shots I've had the chance to take, I shot strictly in RAW, ambient light only.

The IQ of the RAW files in DPP is not what I expected. Blurry would be the closest adjective. Grainy as well. At ISO 400, I should not see as much grain as I am seeing.

I will experiment with RAW+JPEG to see how the camera's JPEGs compare to those that I generate in DPP using the camera's RAW files.

So far, not happy with this purchase! Was planning on using it on days I didn't feel like bringing my gripped 40D with L glass.

I don't have the problems that you describes. I've noticed only a softer image in screen camera (i shot principall in raw) but in pc monitor anithing is ok.

In opposite. I'm very happy of the raw generated by this camera, great also in low light.

1. RAW images have no processing while JPG have been processed by the camera including sharpening.

2. When you view the RAW image on your computer, it is woefully reduced in size. Try viewing it in actual size and see how much detail that you have on the screen and then process it.

I thought the same thing about RAW images when I first looked at mine, but now, I only use RAW in SLR's and P&S. It is a lot more forgiving.

The RAW images produced from my 40D are always sharp in DPP. Its only when I converted them to JPEG do they lose that pop. At times I have to use PS to post-process the JPEGs to get that pop back.

I would have expected to see the same pattern with the RAW images on the G12, but instead the RAW images are blurry.

I did have to upgrade my DPP version in order to get the G12 RAW images to be recognized and I don't know if this has anything to do with it??

Interesting read. Maybe my camera settings are different but when I open a RAW image from my G12 into DPP "unsharp mask" is already selected automatically. When I use the drop down menu to switch that to sharpness I find the image is already preset to 7 on the sharpness scale. So how is that considered no processing in camera in RAW?

Just curious...I'm still working with the default factory settings (other than the file format). Did you change any settings like AF Frame Mode, Servo AF, Tracking AF, etc?

It's interesting that the OP posted six weeks ago, and has never returned or replied.

I find my G11 always needs some sharpening to get to the level I prefer. I generally crank it up to level 9 in DPP with no issues. If you don't want to PP in RAW, then you can adjust the Sharpness level in My Colors custom. I assume the same is true for the G12.
