Crested Pigeons

Nice shot, Peter. Striking eyes. I've never seen a pigeon with a crest before.

Thanks tupe. These birds are very common here but I'd never really seen them this close before and was completely unaware of their colours especially the eyes.

Maybe they aren't a WA species? We usually call them Top Knots.
It's funny how now that I'm taking photos of all these birds that i am actually learning their real names too

Nice shots Peter, these are very common yes. I always seem to have some nesting in a tree in my yard. I too was always brought up calling them Top knots. It was only last year I found out that they were a crested and the Top knot look really different indeed.

We don't get any of the real Top Knot pigeons (Lopholaimus Antarcticus) is SA. I must try getting up on the north/eastern coast one day and try to catch one. I've never seen one as yet. Only other pigeon we have with a crest as far as I know is the Spinifex, but don't think they are seen in SA much either . You did well as alot of these do scare off real easy.

They are usually out of there as soon as they see me. For some reason they hung around for a family portrait. I guess as they get used to seeing me they will become less timid of me?

No idea Peter, to be honest I'm yet to get a good photo of the ones always in my yard. I think they may be a timid bird because they take off everytime I go outside. Maybe they will get used to you though as I find the birds in my yard harder to shoot than the wild birds.

Nice shots. These birds are funny in that they walk away from you more than fly away !
