As long as the battery is chipped of course.

I bought an Opteka BG-E6 my 5D II the other day and I read in the reviews on amazon.com that the grip Opteka grip does not display the battery information. (I did not receive it in the mail yet.)

Reviews: http://www.amazon.com …ter-Release/dp/B003627G56 (external link)

Now as long as the battery is chipped, shouldn't the camera see the information?
I did a search and found the Zeikos and other third party grips do communicate the battery information. Are the people on amazon.com doing something wrong?

Anyone use an Opteka BG-E6?

As long as the grip passes all the battery terminal paths to the body, it's done it's job. I can't imagine any grip not doing that.

Bohdan - I may be, and probably am, completely wrong.

When I was researching grips a while back for my 5D2, I noticed the same thing. Some grips do not use the same array of contacts as others. At the time I was looking the only one that used the proper array of contacts was Phottix and they were charging a premium for their grip. Well over $100, if I remember. For this reason I went ahead and got the Canon grip instead.

Oh really? This sucks, I need to wait til it comes in to try it out. Bad part is if I return it I can only get merchandise credit. All my other grips are Canon but when I finally go for a third party it (might have) let me down.

That's good news. I bet since some these companies are also selling the decoded batteries their grips may have changed to use them.

I ended up paying like $40 shipped for a new one so I couldn't complain if it didnt read battery info. Ive told myself I'd upgrade to the canon grip but I am content with it.

Thanks! So relieved now. I'm just confused as to why people are saying their genuine Canon batteries in the Opteka grip aren't communicating with the camera to display battery info.

could be user error. Im at a law enforcement school and we did handcuffing. People swore their brand new handcuffs weren't working properly, they turned the key to the double bale and the single bale didn't move. It was user error, they turned the key the wrong way. Plus anyone can right a review online. I enjoy my opteka grip.
