Using black string to tie the ends together will put a black line right across your image, not to mention making the placement of the whole assembly extremely limited, as a model's face won't be able to get close enough.

By the looks of the pics to me, those are just about exactly the same size and shape as the curved shower curtain rods that you see at Wal-Mart. They look like just about the same thing. I'm just saying, I think they are machine rolled as well.

Trying to find the time to take photos, oh what a world!!!

I have to confess, I worked with a photographer the other day that has an Eyelighter and I really liked it and the images.

It's definitely different from the Tri-lite with its own unique look.

For beauty and glamour, it actually looks like a really neat tool. I would n't mind having one but at that price, I can live without it.

Here is a idea for the support of the diy eyelighter.... find a company that sells aftermarket headliner kits for old cars... thoses rods are bendable and sturdy at the same time... would be great to shape and not be too heavy at the same time... just my two cents

I have to admit, my ideas for DIY don't always work as well in practice as they seem in my head - but I like to do these things anyway. I can't get the site for the original to display the photos correctly (the old IE version on this computer perhaps), so I can't figure out exactly how this is supposed to work.

Is the arc of the reflector adjustable? If not, why would the rod material need to stand up to bending back and forth?

By the looks of it, it looks like he took one of those "California Sun Bounce" reflector and bent the rods and mounted a stand to it. :) So the price looks inline for what the bigger reflectors run for.

Why not just cut a large hula hoop in half and cover it with some nylon?

Oops, wrong place.

Wouldn't this be easier to do with just a custom frame / pivots and reflective material ?

Great idea Scott! Lightweight and already has the shape needed - I wonder if a hulahoop retains the bend if it were cut in two. If you wrap the fabric around the frame, you would never be able to tell it was a hulahoop.

Just looking at the photos on the site, it looks like the refelctor has roughly a 4 foot diameter - do they make hulahoops that big?

I agree - shots using it would be good. Sample shots as well as some BTS shots. I can imagine that you might want different amount of bend, depending on the subject(s). But I suppose that could be worked out. Also, one could simply set it up to match the $500 version.

While this is more portable, it is still a bit of a problem if you want to take it on location away from the studio. I am still thinking a fully flexible reflector that could be rolled up is a good way to go - and that could be silver on one side and white on the other (I can't imagine silver would be the best in all situations). I just need to figure out a break-down frame.

Wonder where those old hula-hoops are....

Fishing line. Why didn't I think of that? :)
20# Big Game mono would also probably work well...tests out to 30+ before breaking...

This is an image from Ronnie B. at Nikon Cafe.

Good example of the Eyelighter.
