I thought not reading the manual was the manly thing to do? :D

And who stops for directions anymore, thats what GPS's are for, except in WV, but thats a long story. :D never take the back roads on a long trip in WV with a gps to direct you :)

As a Hokie fan... I can so make a lot of jokes... but I do have some experience with a GPS trying to find Wendy's Spicy Chicken sandwich traveling through WV... ending up in a rough neighborhood with Hokie flags, magnets & stickers all over my Explorer....

haha @ shankar. :)

we had to go to Charleston a few years ago and on the way back we thought we would tell the gps to avoid the interstate and take the back roads and see beautiful WV. big mistake!!!

we ended up in the middle of no where, up the mountains. It told us to make a left, and the only thing left to us was a cliff down a steep hillside, no road, and the only thing ahead of us was private property marked no trespassing. So we turned around eventually *narrow road with a cliff on one side and a mountain on the other* and eventually found another way out of pure luck. Then the gps wanted us to drive through one road but it was marked industrial only, so we took the other road next to it that added a few more miles.

So were driving a long and there is a branch in the road, and this isnt a place you want to damage a tire so we stop, get out and move the branch and keep on going. then there is a bigger branch ahead of us a few minutes down the road, again we stop, get out and move the branch. Drive along and jokingly I said whats next, a tree? well yes, a tree was next, blocking the entire road, I get out, the wife gets in the driver side, I pull the tree as far to the side as I can and she drives by and I let go of the tree and get back in the car.

There must have been a big store go through here recently, along another road half the road was washed away and there was this huge pit on the left side. and tree covering half the lane. by this point we havent seen another car in a couple of hours and that got me a bit concerned. :) No banjo music though. then we see a couple trucks pass us, then finally a small car, knowing the road cant be to bad ahead of us if a small car can get through. :)

then were on the outskirts of civilization and were passing all these mining houses, that had small personal bridges for driveways to let them get over the stream that separated their houses with the road, most of these bridges were washed away, and there was mattresses on the front lawn, then a fema trailer.

At each point I kept thinking I should be taking pictures, but nah, half way threw I knew I should be taking pictures but whats the point, I had already missed half the trip.

Its been dark and gloomy for most of this trip as well. The minute we hit VA it was literally brighter and more cheerful looking.

We now no longer take the gps off interstate in WV! Its not so bad in VA and great in TN. For the most part its good in NC. :) although theres one spot the gps doesnt like over by boone.

Wrong turn was filmed near here, within a few hours I think. :D But I think we watched it after this, but not sure. The wife loves it because it has eliza dishku or something like that. The girl from dollhouse/buffy vampire slayer. :)

The second wrong turn sucked, still havent watched the third.

Here's how I did mine. Go to Home Depot or Lowe's and get a roll of silver rolled insulation "Reflectix" that is 24 inches wide and the roll is 25 feet long, 10 feet if you can find it. It feels like bubble wrap and looks bright silver on both sides.
Go to Orchard Supply Hardware and get an 8 foot long piece of aluminum that is 1/8 inch thick and 2 inches wide. Cut a piece 62 inches long. File the edges smooth on both pieces. Take both pieces to a metal fabrication shop such as one that does air conditioning. They have a roller bender at all of the shops. Have them bend the longest piece so after the bend it is about 55 to 60 inches in diameter end to end and looks like a crescent Moon. The shop by my Studio charged me 0 dollars. You can bend it gently a little to get the measurement after. Have the shorter piece bent to match it. Mark the center of both pieces and gaffer tape the smaller piece under the larger piece to give it a stiffer feel like a leaf spring on the rear of a car.
Drill a hole 7/32nds of an inch through both pieces as they are taped together. On and extra tripod that you have laying around thread this aluminum unit onto the 1/4x 20 stud on the tripod. Now you have the base attached and can tilt, raise it to fit your client. Cut the silver plastic insulation to 60 inches. Put Velcro on the curved metal in four places, ends and toward the center. Put the other side of the Velcro on one side of the plastic down the center to match the metal. Set the plastic onto the aluminum and you have an eye-lighter that costs about 50 bucks to build. The Aluminum is two inches longer than the insulation so it sticks out and I drilled a 1/4 inch hole to hang it up when not in use.
It can be broke down in a matter of seconds, plastic rolled up into a roll about 3 inches in diameter to go on location if desired. When using said equipment have the eye-lighter tilted about 30 degrees down toward the client and 30-36 inches from the nose. Have your studio 36 inch softbox tilted down with the center pointed just under the chin of your client, the same distance as the distance the eye-lighter is. Your studio light should be the same distance from the eye-lighter directly above it. Basically a equilateral triangle. If you use a 36 inch white translucent umbrella instead of a softbox point the center of it at the nose as it spreads a wider beam to the eye-lighter than the softbox. Watch the highlights at the bottom of the eyes and tilt eye-lighter to show as desired. Have fun.
