How did you get your watermark? Just create it yourself or did you have someone create it for you?

99% of the watermarks are pure text... I've learned there is a lot involved in typography, but it's not quite a "logo",

I've played around with a couple of watermarks... this is my latest but I'm not 100% happy with it..

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png'

Hate that my first name has so many spelling and last name is long/also misspelled... so hard to brand!

Basically trying to figure out if I should outsource design of the watermark...

Unfortunately a water mark like that can be cloned out. Not always so easy but given enough time.

I just started using Digimarc Pro which applies an invisible watermark to an image that can be traced via Digimarc web bots that surf the net looking for and reporting Digimarc'd images. Digimarc images can be read in CS4 and CS5 and will either show your information on their page or redirect the inquiry to your URL of choice. $99 a year for 2000 images.

So there are two main forms of watermarking - to protect the image and to brand/sign the image.

I'm less concerned about "putting my watermark there to protect the photo" and more about branding/signing the photo...

Interesting. Does branding make a significant difference for you in the marketplace?

Branding is the utmost ideal in business. Taken to the extreme you get people to buy clothing with your company name and/or logo on it like Aeropostle, Nike, Coke, etc. Branding creates simple knowledge of your company name being the decision of buying, buying the shirt because it is from or says Aeropostle or hot teen and college clothing makers.

I use a watermark for two main purposes:

1) Identity. Not so much branding as I don't have a logo but people can readily identify my work as I don't have a particular style. It also links back to my site so if someone uses it at least there is a chance that it will lead back to me. Also clients/models also use my watermark for web images so it's free advertising.

2) To help prevent hot linking. If a site hot links an image it will point directly back to my site making them less likely to be abused, they're more likely to go after someone that has no watermarks.

Other than that most people don't know how to clone out professionally, so won't remove a watermark.

Some call me the Heilan' Laddie, but others call me Rob.
