Hi Everyone,

I'm upgrading my memory for MBP. Does anyone have a preference for Memory Brands like Kingston, PNY, etc.

i know apple uses Crucial, but they are expensive...

thoughts?

thanks!!

Whatever is cheapest, IMO

RAM is very reliable across brands, some brands have longer warranties and better service but there isn't any worth in spending 50$ more for a different brand when the end result will be the same.

I keep away from the cheap stuff. I've had too many bad experiences. Mushkin, Kingston, Crucial are all pretty decent. I've returned PNY a couple of times and now just put them on my banned list. Transend, A-Data, or Simpletech I'll use if the PC is not going to be run at it's limits or it's a kids machine but for a workhorse, I prefer the name brands.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I like GSkill the most - exellent price/performance ratio, and so far I haven't had a single problem with a dead stick or incompatibility of some sort. And I've bought hundreds of sticks of RAM from them over the last few years.

Just get the cheapest one you can find. All the chips are the same. The only difference between cheaper RAM and more expensive RAM is how much they test it to make sure it's good...and marketing. Also, "Mac" RAM is just normal RAM with a price markup.

Yup, add me to the list of happy G. Skill customers.
I use all G. Skill Ripjaws series for my last build and current build.

Anyhow, the speed and CAS latency are better on the RAM from reputable companies: Crucial, Kingston, Corsair, Patriot, Mushkin, OCZ, G. Skill, etc...

G.skill seems to be one of the better brands nowadays. Lifetime warranty no questions asked and all.

Just make sure if you're getting DDR3 it's 1.5 volts (or lower).

I would get higher line of Mushkin, Kingston, Patriot, Corsair, or OCZ.

Corsair literally invented the High Performance High reliability RAM market waaaaay back when. OCZ, G Skill, Mushkin etc.. all followed. Viking and Kingston are older RAM companies, but they also followed Corsair into the high performance fray.

IMHO, if I am building a high performance system that will be overclocked, it's Corsair all the way.

Otherwise I look for "Value" RAM with Micron or Samsung chips,. Kingston has worked for me quite well.

If it's of any relevance, G.Skill holds 7 out of the top 10 DDR3 kits on Newegg.

+1 for Corsair. It's all I have used in over 10 PC builds that I have done.
