So, it's cold, snowy, and dark outside all the time around here so I've been experimenting with what I have around the house to try to take interesting photos. I figured I'd play with my roulette table a bit and see what I could come up with. Any suggestions are welcome as this is something I can set up and shoot again any time, so if you think something would work better I could easily give it a try. Thanks.

Did you intend to have the motion blur to imply the roulette wheel spinning? If so, great job. If not, bump up shutter speed.

Thanks, guys. Yes, I spun the wheel prior to spinning to get the sense of motion. I also spun the ball and wanted to capture that swirling around as well, but the ball is a really dark brown and doesn't show up very good against the black.

And to be completely honest, there was no special lighting. In fact, it was just taken down in the basement with a pretty harsh light coming in from a window to the left. The effect was achieved with a few minutes of work in Lightroom.

Here's the original:

I would like to capture the ball in motion as well, so I might have to practice getting another shot of just the ball and I could brighten it up a bit in photoshop and merge it with the original photo I guess.

As a non gambler, I'm unfamiliar with the components of such a diabolical device. However, the dark bands particularly the bottom one are distracting in their similarity with too high a flash sync speed. On a plus side the motion blur works very well but would have also liked to have seen a ball either frozen mid spin or with a streak of blur

Agreed ^

I think it might have looked a bit better in portrait orientation, the fading off of the table would work nicely I think
