What Equipment Needed?

I have a 10" Orion Dobsonian telescope and a Canon XTi. I have really been wanting to do Astrophotography for a long time, but never had the time. Well now I do have the time and wonder what equipment I need. Not sure what kind of adapter to connect the camera to the telescope or what timer remote control will work with my camera. I appreciate any help.

Basically with a dob your limited to short exposures like the moon and planets . Especially with a 10" FOV moves rapidly . If you want to do Deep Sky Imaging then you need a scope on an EQ mount with either tracking motors or a Go-To mount .

As Ron mentioned your telescope is limited having no means of tracking. At 1200mm you'll see he effects of Earth's rotation almost immediately. Even for planetary work you'll have some difficulty. It can be tiring shooting and then recentering objects for every exposure. But for lunar work you could make it work with some practice and patience. The Dobsonian mount will have to be snugged up to help support the camera weight.

Canon makes remote switches for their cameras but there are many other lines out there including remote transmitter-type switches like this one that allow total hands free starting and stopping of exposures.

my dad tried it even with the upgrade JMI tracking motors and still wasn't good. Hard to get on target, swap eyepiece for camera, focus and track and 95% of the time the object wasn't in FOV anymore. He gave up and got a ASGT5 mount to start with. I don't think he pulls the DOB out much anymore these days.

Orion does make motorized tracking capable Dobs. Unfortunately mine is an older model without tracking. I still would like to try moon shots then, but am not sure what camera adapter to get.
