Hello,

Wishing the weather is better where you are than it is here in Tennessee.

Anyone reading this, take some pictures of what the weather is in your neck of the woods! It would be interesting to see the varying types of weather around the world.

Just playing around with the new camera. Cranked up the ISO to 6400, shutter speed of 1/1000sec and Fstop of 14. Focal length 100mm.

Any recommendations to freeze the snow without making it look grainy like it does here?

Hi David - I don't know what your ambient like was like or time of day but I would certainly lower your ISO and aperture. I would not use f/14 as that is probably causing a bit of diffraction on your image and a bit of degradation.

Drop your ISO to say, 1600 which will then require you to change your aperture 2-stops down to about f/9 or thereabouts - this would be closer to the sweet spot of that lens. With those settings you could still use 1/1000 which is more than adequate for that snow. You could then even drop that to 1/500 and reduce your ISO to 800 which would further reduce the "graininess." :D - Stu

The first thing I have done is to learn about "diffraction".

I read up on this resource (external link)....

Okay... I will play around with this and your recommendation. It appears you are correct about how the above picture is not 'clear' and due to the type of lense 35-135mm 4-5.6 would take questionable pictures in that range.

Best Regards,

David

I wouldn't hesitate to use f14, sometimes you need it. Keep in mind the diffraction limit for the T2i is around f7, anything past that will get softer, it is just how much softer you are willing to tolerate. I would avoid going higher than f16, that is kind of a personal max.

With that said, I think your shot would benefit from a larger aperture so not everything is in focus, far to distracting currently.

Hope it helps David, and best of luck. You were simply "pushing the limits" of your equipment under the circumstances. I'm sure you'll get the hang of the new camera and thoroughly enjoy its capabilities.

Sapearl,

Okay, here is another crack at the shot. This time ISO 1600, F10, and shutter speed of 1/400. Focal length 100mm.

The shot is certainly clearer just as you predicted. Just to see, I took out my 50mm 1.4, and it really didn't produce anything stunning. It is a dim, windy, snowy day....

Thaks for the advise.

Anyone else want to share photos?

Saint Paul, MN

predicted snowfall: 14" actual snowfall: 20-25"

due to blowing snow also, some areas were more than waist high.

Sure David - I'll jump in. Cleveland is right on the shore of Lake Erie and we can get some pretty ferocious winds that result in bizarre ice storms. This shot was taken not too long after one of those "blows", with trees, shrubs and rocks being locked in an icy coat. It was shot late in the day for maximum contrast and I used a CPL to help darken the sky and improve saturation.

My God Sapearl! I would expect a wooly-mamouth to walk by at any moment! Looks pre-historic.

Garys1 - Don't talk to me! LOL Looks like a typical day in Hawaii! Simply Gorgeous..... Nice

callaesthetics - I knew there was a reason why I stayed away from MN. You confirmed a good decision was made... Thanks! :)
