I'm looking into making cases for some of my equipment (includes camera gear, lighting gear, LCD TV, and other odds and ends). The goal is to have some tidy cases that will be durable yet lightweight, for transportation in my car, but also to be wheeled from unloading to actual location of setup. To this point, I've been using a dolly, but its pretty unwieldy and, frankly, looks pretty ghetto.

I've noticed that it seems pretty standard to use these aluminum looking panels like such: http://www.rentphotobooths.com/buy_Photobooth_03.jpg (external link)

I have no idea what this material is even called or where to get started looking into researching this stuff. Anyone have any ideas on where to look?

OR, if you've made any custom cases (with padding) for transporting your own equipment, could you chime in with some suggestions of where I might start my search on materials & ideas to build my own?

Thanks!

Check eBay for used Hardigg or Thermodyne military-style shipping cases (you see them in movies all the time being used by elite hit teams and high-tech criminals). Many times you can find these hinged and wheeled. You may have to search for a while, but you can expect more to be up for sale in January as companies renew stocks.

Weight, protection, and solid wheels are the key factors for cases for in town use. Unless you fly regularly, ATA or pelican style cases are overkill and so heavy. For your camera gear, closed cell foam cases from Lowepro or Tamrac with wheels are a great solution.

For lightweight rolling lighting cases, the Photoflex Transport line is hard to beat.

Transporting LCDs is a little more complicated, and most cases available usually cost 2X the price of the screen. The SKB line of LCD cases is a reasonable and solid choice:

A lot of people in Nashville use http://roadloadnashville.com/ (external link). For the road type case that you are refrencing. ATA cases are poplular in that style too.

For photo gear I prefer Pelican and Tenba.

Hey! Ghetto looking stuff is a lot less likely to be stolen. I use Rubbermaid bins and a twenty five year old dolly that's about eight different colors and has a squeaky wheel. But I know folks who use diaper bags for camera bags.... who would steal one of those.... That's where I draw the line, though.
