Enjoying the thread.
I took a b&w film course in college, majored in painting, and have been using a dslr for a little over a year. My photoshop skills are sketchy. I enjoy photographing people. I like the expression on this little man.

It has been said before and I will say this again. Anyone who know's how to draw and pain will get a grasp of photography 10 times faster vs a person who had never done anything with imaging.

this is a fantastic capture! The colors, the processing and the expression are spot on. Great portrait of a child. If I were you I'd start moving from simple shots like these, to composing something more complex. You have a huge potential.

Here is one from Spain this summer.

arrgh sometime sI just want to shake up the photographer! A lost opportunity to make this shot truly awesome is lost.
you have perfect everything here, except the angle. You could have turned this into a work of are have you shot this at a 90 degree angle. The buildings are a perfect color match. Blue towels would have been perfect against the blue sky, reflections, everything would have just made perfect picture. Instead, this is a nice, pretty, well shot average picture...

re: airfromusmc image ^^

Personally I find the "Dead End" sign, arrows going "both" ways sign (straight to heaven, straight to hell), the "Do Not Enter" sign, and the walk light highly symbolic for this apparent battle of wits.

I think this is not bad. Bikes are very photogenic for some reason. Much more than cars and segways ;) I think this photo has a ncie compositional structure. The circle shapes rhyme with each other (two wheels in the pic) and lead the eye along the entire shot. Not sur eif this was intentional. If not - the you got lucky, and next time you will look for corresponding shapes in your composition. I am not sure that I like the contrast to be pulled that much, but that's just personal preference. Good work!

I named it stationary for two reasons. One i waited on one knee for a while to get a good shot without a car driving down the road. Two i also had to wait for some form of traffic in the distance as well. Snapped a few shots and this was the best one. Question. One part that nags me a little is the small bit of handle bar that is visible. I was on the fence about PP it out. What do you think? Thanks for the critiques they are very helpful.

Don't forget the arguing religion is a "dead end" connection also. Joe, I had somebody tell me I should crop out the guy caring the sign in the background and maybe art work those signs outta the background too :lol: Thanks I'm glad a few folks around here like you and K get it. I guess theres hope for me yet.

I like this image though I do think the contrast is a bit high and I kinda like the crop as is handlebar and everything. K hit it with the comp comment and the repeating shapes.

Gotta crash 06:15 photo shoot tomorrow.

I'll play.

Been shooting for a little over a year now. Actively pursuing photojournalism, interning with AP and lovin' my credentials.

Shot this a couple weeks ago at the Raiders vs Dolphins game:

IMHO and again IMHO ONLY.
sports photography in general doesn't really have a place in my heart to be honest. I mean, all you do is to sit there with a 600mm white pipe and hope that something interesting happens... by the end of the game you wish you never have done that :)
maybe it's just me as I don't watch sports, I'd rather play them :):)
Though I really like when a photographer takes a step back and starts to show more from "other"side of the sports scene. Like this portrait for example. It's just nice to look at. I won't comment on compositions and all that, because it's not really that important here.
It's about the guy's eyes covered by the towel. There's something there that make me like this one. There are no rules. Just good pictures. This is a good picture to me.

I think timing is something you have to develop for sports photography and it's really not as easy as it sounds. It's right up there with "vision" and "creativity" and that "rhyming" you keep mentioning.

The difficulty comes from the very thing you claim makes it too easy...the photographer has zero control over what's in front of his lens.

theres a big disconnect between photographers who create their worlds and who reflect it. I love street photography, but shooting sports professionally is not for me. I'd die of boredom in a week :) different strokes....

Sounds like you've never actually done it before. I'm not expecting you to like it or even shoot it. Just don't dismiss it as easy and boring. Trust me, it's not. We should all respect those who are good at the things we cannot or will not do.

I can't shoot birds because I don't have the patience for it. That doesn't mean I don't admire and respect the dedication and knowledge (you need to know your subject in order to shoot it well) they have.

I didn't show any disrespect by saying that it is boring to me.
Sports photography is boring to me. It is.
Not gonna do it. Not interested. Not for me. There are great examples of it, I've seen them and I have nothing against people who created those photos.
