hey gang, didn't know where to post this thread. mods feel free to move to appropriate section.

i have a shoe box full of 35mm color slides, bent up a bit, but the image is retained. the type that go into the carousel and then into the projector, showing slide by slide as the cartridge rotates.
i also have negatives that are wrapped in the original wax paper, and then in a heavier paper sleeve, BUT on one side of the negative, the wax-type paper has stuck enough that when i peel it off, it leaves a residue on one side only, the other side is 'free'.

questions:

1. what is a good scanner that possibly flattens the color slide while reproducing it digitally? budget around $200. i see i need a scanner that does both negatives and color slides?

2. how can i clean up the negatives of this residue? what can i use that won't damage the image?

what happened was our house burned down back in 1980 and these were 'saved'. the heat adhered the wax paper onto one side of the negatives and bent the color slides, the small cardboard frame around the color slides is in good shape, just bent and creased in a couple areas per slide. BUT no burning marks anywhere. i can salvage most of these i think, these pictures go far back as 1963, before i was born.

thanks

Have you looked into slide scanning services? I know they exist, but i've never used them.

Agree. Before you go too far, check into local services. I started to investigate slide scanners until I realized that a local place would do 400 slides for $100.

Regarding the bent mounts, you could probably remount them. You used to be able to buy empty, do-it-yourself mounts, but I don't know if they are still available or not.

I too am interested in knowing the options. I however, do not have slides - but many negatives, most of them are in good condition.

I prefer to something at home, at my leisure time . . . to enjoy the work and add personal touches . . . and would not opt for slide/negative scanning service as first choice.

I was looking into the options few weeks ago - these are the ones I have seen.

But I am not sure how good they are . . . it would have been nice to know from someone who might have used these devices.

It will answer all your questions about dealing with damaged slides and negatives, scanning, and restoring images.

There are many out there, but whatever you buy make certain that it has digial ICE and unsharp mask. Otherwise you'll be spending eons taking care of dust and scratches. I have an Epson v500 for scanning slides and negatives (35mm and 120/220) and I also invested in VueScan and ColorPerfect.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

Problem is, I am not sure how any of these are going to work once I buy one.

Soak them in water with a bit of wetting agent.
Gently wipe them (use your fingers) to remove the paper. Take care not to scratch them.
Then let them dry.

And wear gloves when handling slides or negs.... the oils from your "clean" fingers is very corrosive.
