I've been really contemplating trading my 7D gripped and 5D gripped for a 1DMKIV Any thoughts? I just think the 1dMKIV is an all around bad ass camera that incorporates pretty much everything I need. The only draw back is I'd have 1 body and no Full Frame.

I would imagine that you don't have the cash to just sell your 7D (Gripped) and pony up the rest for the 1D MK IV?

IM thinking the same thing myself after the first of the year when I cash in my Apple Stock as I will be sitting on about 4K. I already have a 1D MK III that is stellar so I have a 1 series body. But I am also wanting to get FF eventually but need at least a second body for sports.

But I also need a 400mm F/2.8 IS lens later in the spring but don't know if I can afford getting both the camera and the 400mm.

That's what I would suggest if you have the chance. But it will be asked by so many people of what you do that would determine why you would get rid of two bodies and merge into one?

1) If you can afford to,
2) If your business can benefit from it (ROI),
3) If it's not about gear lust (although if you answered "Yes" to #1, who gives a @#$% about everything else),
4) If you think it'll provide you with better end product (IQ, composition, nailing the shot),

Then go for it.

well If I had to I could just sell the 7D gripped and keep the 5DMKII. don't get me wrong I love my 5DMKII but I just feel that the 1DMKIV pretty much merges both cameras and then adds a little extra features to make one superior camera minus the full frame! I'm just needing superior noise handling in my wedding work and video capture is stunning on the 1DMKIV not to mention the amazing focusing system and brutal weather sealing. I just nee a tool that doesn't skip a beat and can pretty much handle everything I throw at it! minus the Full frame. I just can't find an argument against the idea except for 1. you won't have two bodies and 2. you won't have full frame. But there are sooo many pros outweighing the cons it seems like. I don't know that's why I put it up here to get other pro's thoughts on it.

i suggest renting a 1D IV first. I haven't personally used one but have heard from several that the IV's AF isn't the best in low-light (i.e. weddings)

really? ^ I loved the 1DMKIV in low light. I've used one before. I fell in love with it. The 5DMKII isn't the best in low light by any means.

yeah as much as I hate saying what others said without having any first hand knowledge myself, it's just what I heard. But if you already tried it and liked it, by all means get another ;)

I've considered the 1D4 many times... the problem I always run into is price.

$4,700 - 1D4
$1,400 - 7D
$1,000 - 5D

Price difference... $2,300 ... so for the price of a 1D4 I can have a 7D, 5D, and 5D2? WTF!!!

So really it is up to you, if the camera is worth the premium to you, go for it.

guess it just depends on your needs. For someone who needs the fps or weather sealing they can't combine all 3 of those cameras to get some of the features from the 1D.

I can't think of a situation where 10FPS is going to give a significant advantage over 8FPS, if you buy 2 7D's you can electronically trigger them offset by 1/16 of a second from each other and get 16FPS with some fancy programing :)

As for weather sealing, nothing a good camera/lens cover can't fix.

I agree, to some folks, it is the perfect camera for them, for me... I prefer multiple cameras anyways, lets me have multiple lenses mounted ;)

Personally, that's not a deal I would make...

I sold off a 40D and a 5D Classic to offset a 1DMkIV but the 7D is superior to the 40D and (IMO) the 5DMkII is a significant upgrade from the 5D Classic so I think you're fine with what you have.

I say go for the 1D4. The only thing I would advise against is having only 1 camera to shoot a paid wedding (or any paid gig). Sure, camera failure is rare... but all it takes is one failure (without a backup) and your reputation is shot. I'm sure if you sat down with a potential client, go through your portfolio, and then ultimately disclose that you only have 1 camera to shoot with... I suspect you might lose some clients because they sure as heck wouldn't appreciate it if that 1 camera failed on their wedding day.

Having just one camera does suck, but I suspect if you have the money for a 1D4, you can afford to snag a 20D just as a "just in case" camera.

Good idea !

Dump $250 + shipping for a 4 day rental when you are going to buy it anyways? If you REALLY hate it you can always resell at less of a loss than that. I never understood renting unless you have a super phobia of re-selling or you just have to try every lens under the sun.
