I will start off by saying that I am no professional but this photo deserves a comment after 4 hours posting time...I like it! The composition of the tree along with the great clouds and untouched snow makes for a good image. It does have a bit of a blue cast to it, but that really doesn't seem to throw it off for me.

I am no professional, just a hobbyist who loves to click. :) I loved this picture very much. Just a small modification I would love to make in this frame. Instead of keeping the Tree at dead center of the frame, follow the rule of third and move it bit left or right. The appeal and the composition will be more pleasing.

Regards,
Tirtha

Beautiful colors of the sunset. Love the clouds. I think your photo would be a more interesting if the tree was off center (rule of thirds). Maybe crop it a little off center to the right or left. Thanks for sharing.

For a first post, this image is great! Sometimes I get really nervous when I click on these threads and don't comment since I feel like I come off as rude most of the time.

One thing to keep in mind for future reference is the Rule of Thirds (look it up if you don't already know what it is). For this image, the tree being in the center works with the clouds. The direction and pull of the clouds is the center of the image so all is well. However, sometimes a stronger composition might be moving the main subject to the left quadrant--even in this photo: another direction the clouds tend to move is from the upper right to the lower left so positioning the tree there might work also. Just a random quick lesson :)
But seriously, this image is quite good. Maybe see if you can lighten up the snow a little bit in post processing. If it throws off things though, I wouldn't worry about it.

I am inclined to agree with most people to suggest the rule of thirds, and while I immediately do not know what this image would have looked like with the tree shifted left or right I believe that in this photo it looks best as is. Here is why:

The horizon in low, the angle is shot uphill, the clouds converge towards the bottom and center, and the tree is directly in front of the light source. Even the trees on the horizon sort of taper towards the center. But the main thing I think that I like the most about the photo is that the tree is pretty much dead center of the photo. Not just a little left or right, but to my eye the trunk is centered up almost exact (I say almost because I didn't measure or anything). If it was shifted the sun would have shown brighter and maybe had a negative effect.

I am not saying all this to discount any other opinions, just throwing mine in since I think this image is great along with the rest of you!

Many thanks for your comments guys, the clouds really dictated the tree position and after a few different crops i decided to keep it as is.

Very nice, I'm fan of solo trees done well and this has been done very well. The rule of thirds need not apply here as it is a strong image. Off centring the tree would weaken the composition and the lines of the clouds draw the eye round nicely from either side to the main subject anyway. Rules are meant to be broken and they are really more like guides than rules!

Beautiful part of the world you live in, I was in Wensleydale for a week earlier in the year and fell in love with the Dales!

Nice image, nice composition. There are 4 elements here that are textured; the main tree, the tree line, the snow, and the sky. That makes for an image that has visual interest. The color and print tone work well supporting what the eye would see in person. Move over everyone we have another landscaper amongst us! Congratulations and welcome.

I like it this way. I'm going to go against a few others and say forget any composition rule for this. It's one of those cases where it just looks right dead center. The horizon being pushed down to make room for the clouds might be what's doing it.

I envision this photo with a 4:5 aspect ratio framing vertically with the bottom just below the bottom of the tree. This subject and sky cries out for something vertical and the horizontal view makes my eyes and brain fight with the composition as posted.
