I always thought that the flash maxed out at 1/200 or 1/250 with my 580EXII.
I'm so happy because it turns out I can sync at 1/4000th.

here's a hint...

HINT: Leave your instruction manual next to your toilet. It's amazing what you can learn in THAT library...

BTW: HSS is great when you are using flash fill because you often need a faster shutter speed than 1/250 second and still want fill flash. Although the power of the flash is somewhat reduced at HSS, it still works great; especially since I normally use my fill flash around minus-one stop. Just remember to return the unit from HSS when you no longer need that capability so you can have the full power of your flash available.

Seriously, I should start to read my manuals.

Did you also read about the huge power loss from syncing at such high speeds and the limited need for using HSS for freezing action?

I think if you have HSS on and are shooting within your cameras sync speed, it wont use the HSS function. Someone pipe in if Im wrong though. Its happened once before.

That is correct. You can leave HSS enabled on your flash all the time. The system will then only go into HSS mode when you select a shutter speed over 1/200. That said, you really need to know about the limitations of it. It drastically reduces the power output of the flash since it now has to flash multiple times in a single exposure.
