Why has gears so recently crept into these forums?

Am I missing something?

"Gears" is one of the least offensive English faux pas that are seen here. Many others, not so much.

The list is too long and varied to type out!

Gears and lense are the ones that annoy me most though

While we're on poor grammar and spelling, recently in a thread someone wrote cannon.. Lower case c and double nn..

I had Canon spelled that way when I first started. It never occurred to me that it might be spelled differently. Only when someone told me it was wrong did I then realize my mistake. Maybe politely informing them of their mistake (by PM perhaps to avoid public notice) would go a long way, rather than mocking them in another thread. I seriously doubt they intended any ill will for their mishap; I know I didn't.

Cannon - is probably an acceptable one after all that is the more common spelling (apart from amongst photographers) so it is easy for the mind to slip into it.

The others - not so much.

I don't know why, but the phrase "English faux pas" seems really odd to me.

Honestly, for a non-native speaker, it seems pretty easy to assume that adding an "s" to the end would be the correct plural form. Gears is the plural form of gear when when we are talking about those things in a transmission, so you can see how one could make that mistake.

We have a hobby. Indeed, we have a plurality of hobbies. One of them is being annoyed by grammatical errors.
