I'm considering purchasing a digital photo-frame for my Dad. Now, he's not at all computer literate (85 years old) - so, it needs to be basically 'plug and play'. Would like something of a decent size (12-15 inch diagonal), willing to spend up to $150.

I would plan to send him new memory modules, from time to time, with new photos. Would like to have something that just reads right from the memory module, or (even better) adds the new photos to on-board memory - slide show mode. My sister, and other relatives, might also be sending memory modules with new photos. I could be at his place, when I give it to him, to show him how to operate it - after that, it would mainly be mailing new memory modules for loading.

I'm seeing all sorts of models listed, some with rather poor reviews.

Also, how well do these handle photos of landscape/portrait mix?

The beginner clicks the shutter and says "Let's see what I got." ... The experienced photographer thinks "How can I capture what I see?"

This one is both smaller (10") than you'd like and a bit over your budget ($180 in cart) but it may win in terms of convenience because it has its own email address that you can mail new pictures to. That way you won't need to mail memory cards, wait for one to fill up before you send it off, risk it getting lost in the mail, explain your dad how to swap cards, etc.

Dad doesn't have any sort of Internet connection whatsoever. He does live where there is cellular coverage - could this device receive photos via a 2G/3G connection?

The Sony frames are the BEST in my opinion.

Sony just updated their digital frames but even if you get last years models they have the best displays.

I don't think it can, but you'd have to check their product info to be sure.

I can second the recommendation for Sony frames though. I bought one for my inlaws and looks great.

Thanks for all the comments so far.

I think I'll talk to Sis about the Sony DPF-D1020.

Lucky Break I Walked into Goodwill two days ago and saw an unopened Polaroid 10" frame for $20 Nice stainless frame. I snagged it quick Been playing with it the past few days Just right as a slide projector from 6-8 feet away. The wife thinks it alone looks good enough off in the livingroom. She likes the showing pics mode too It can stay if she doesn't complain. Polaroid found a nice spot with digital photo frames.

I bought a Ceiva picture frame for my parents for Christmas last year & it is wonderful! It plugs into a phone line & new photos download daily. All my siblings & nieces & nephews send photos to it too. The one I got holds 40 pictures at a time & then every day it switches to a new 40 pictures. All the rest of the pictures are stored online. I do all the managing online for them and my parents don't have to do a thing. They love it!

eta: I just realized this is an old thread that got bumped up to the top. But I'll leave this up in case somebody else is looking for something like this. We're extremely happy with the Ceiva!

Sorry to say this, why not top-up a few hundred dollars more for an ipad/ipad2? It certainly does much more than just displaying photos. ;)
