It is Orions time of year;) Done with a new Astronomik CLS filter riding in the cam.

Turned out well for an achromat and unmodifide cam.

Well I'm impressed with that CLS filter! Good work too! So this is with an unmodified 1000D? Or is this the one you took the stock IR filter out of and put nothing back in? The CLS filter just sits under where the lens used to go right? I've got to get me one of those....:)

Hi TJ,

Yep, unmodifide 1000D Rebel. Jsigone is the fellow with the IR mod. He likes to tear stuff apart. That cam is working well for him. I am begining to think the mods are not a requirement as long as you have the right filters. And yep, The CLS is the clip in type like you have. Jsigone is correct, once you have the custom white balane set - this filter rocks!:D

Thanks

Very nice shot. I'm always fascinated by the Horsehead Nebula.

The Horse Head is always a tough one, and from the looks of it you put in some good effort with this one.
With that being said, a little C&C that I hope you don't mind, and I hope it helps.
It looks like you got good image data and saturation. However, the end result looks more like a painting than a picture of a DSO. I can only assume that is a result of post processing.
Likely causes are probably NR or blurring of some kind trying to smooth things out because it has that scratchy look which there are a few things that can cause that. One cause is trying to stretch out more color than you actually have. Especially the reds with an unmodded camera.
Other likely causes are Noise accumulation during image capture, which is easily corrected by capturing more light frames to improve your SNR, and more importantly using Darks as well as Bias frames and Flats when stacking. Additionally, you should allow the mount to drift a pixels or two between frames every now and then so you're not saturating the same pixels with the same light. (Dithering!)

Howdy,

Yep, all of the above (pretty much). Limited time to play allows for only so much effort. I will definitely revisit the Horse head on a one night, one object, properly done campaign. Right now I am happily playing with my new filter:) getting an idea of what new capabilities came with the filter purchase. The filter demonstrates itself to be worth the money paid (which is a lot). Now all I have to do is start getting more serious about gathering and processing the data. Thanks for the suggestions.

I saw your comparison pictures using that filter. It is impressive the difference it makes.
If over development continues on its present course around here, I'm either going to have to move or by some kind of LP filter. I'm thinking the LP filter would be less costly. :)
