I'm planning on ordering a 70-200 2.8 IS II after the new year so that it's a 2011 taxable event. Of course, I'll order during the first week while the rebate is still in effect.

I live in NJ so stores like B&H and Adorama charge tax. There are a few eBay sellers like 123fstop who claim to be authorized but do not appear on the Canon list. The savings is pretty appealing to me, though.

So are they authorized? And if not, what's the risk?

Only tru way to tell if their authorized is to go to canon's website and look them up.If they arnt listed, they are not authorized. If a deal sounds too good, then its fishy.I would stay away from a lot of ebay sellers, however there are some legit ones too.

I also live in NJ and I have never been charged tax by B & H. They also offer free shipping on quite a few items including the 70-200 you are talking about. When you speak of B & H charging tax, do you mean if you physically go there?

No, shipping to NJ. And maybe I'm mistaken and I'm thinking of just Adorama. But if B&H isn't charging tax, I'm pretty sure they're supposed to since NY and NJ have a reciprocal relationship. I'll have to call them, though, and see what the deal is. Thanks.

Does anyone know if Canon minds if an authorized seller sells an item on Ebay? Some companies don't like this and will deny warranty claims on items purchased through ebay (Garmin navigation is one of them).

Unless you know for sure, request a store receipt that does NOT reference ebay whatsoever.

I bought from a few of those sellers and they usually give me a company receipt, as if I bought from them directly.

If I recall correctly in order to maintain ones name in good standing with the "Authorized Dealers List" there are some strict rules.(More than the two I recall)

One of them is the "brick and mortar" rule ... a real storefront, specializing in Cameras.

Another, a reseller must not list items "at cost" or well below current MSRP (especially online). Which many online sources are doing today and thus eliminating them.

You can be an authorized dealer of Canon products and not be on their "official" list. There are some retailers who don't mind being off the "official" list allowing them to control what they choose to resell an item for.

I used to work at one such retail shop, and it is still in business today, has been for over 30 years ... the whole time selling Canon products. With visits from an Official Canon Sales Rep every month in the 7 years that I worked there. That shop as well as a couple of shops I frequent in the Dallas area I cannot seem to find on the current 2011 list.

Another ruler pops into mind ...

Must accept items in need of repairs by way of warranty. Generally meaning they are a drop and ship source for your item to be sent directly to Canon if still covered in the warranty period.

Not true (at least anymore), e.g., Amazon and Newegg. As in "specializing in cameras" I can't see Walmart is specializing in camera in any way.

True, so they get around it by "add to cart to see our super dupa special price" thing (although they still can't known the price down by a lot).

Amazon, NewEgg, and Wal-Mart use their corporate office addresses as a "brick and mortar" qualification, there "bill to address". I was present at the PMA Convention "Canon Corporate" meetings about 15+ years ago where the question was brought up to Canon Corp Reps asking how it was legal for them to be considered as such. It all comes down to buying power, period. It was mentioned how these same power buyers would price out and kill the Mom & Pop shops ... which it has it many cases across USA.

Exactly. They are definitely ice skating the issue!

I would think it one researches his/her purchase well enough before making it there should never be a need for a return that isn't warranty justified. If its due under warranty you send it to Canon repair direct.

You don't go looking to buy a 70-200 these days with the intention of returning it because you don't like it ... that doesn't fly well with the little reseller making minimum on his merchandise. So of course they have no return policy.
