I would like to connect my 7D to control my 430 EX settings but all I get is the message that it is the wrong type of flash or it is not switched on. It is on, in ETTL mode, slave and pointing at the 7D.
I realize the internal flash does the triggering but to be able to set the strength of the flash from in the hide would be a bonus.

Any help would be appreciated as I have tried everything I can, even reading the manual

Did you make sure they are both on the same channel, or rather that the channel the 430 is on is being recognized?

if it is on ettl...the camera will choose the flash power...??
u can use flash exposure compensation though. if you hit the iso button and move the backwheel, it will change the FEC.

What you haven't realized is that when you are controlling flashes through the internal master in the 7D, then all settings are done with the internal flash. This includes those that concern the external slaves.
Settings for the external flash is only valid for an external flash in the camera's hotshoe.

Set your internal flash to remote control, select if you want to use both the internal and the external, or the external only, and then apply the settings you desire to the external flash through the internal one.

If you still don't get it, come back.

Is the 430EX II set to slave on the flash unit?

In this video he describes how you can manually control a flash, or any flash, within a certain group...that to me says I can do it remotely and not attached to the camera.

Flash is set to slave, groups and channel are correct. Will not connect. Flash and camera are close and facing. Damn, I am wondering if my 7D is faulty :(

I freely admit this is a question based in ignorance since I don't have a 7D but...

- Does the built in flash have to be extended?
And...
- If so, is it extended?

Built in flash has to be extended to fire the remote units. Not to connect. But either way it is extended.

Did you hold in the "mode" button (I think thats it - button on the far right of the flash unit?) It will turn into "wireless mode." That should allow you to connect with the camera and fire.

I am trying this off the top of my head without my camera in front of me. Mine did the same thing and I just forgot to put the flash into the correct mode. You can then go into the settings in the camera and adjust FCE.

Just to reiterate what Anders stated above.
You CAN control the 430 remotely with the 7D, but it IS NOT going to be accessed via the EXTERNAL flash menu. You will control the 430 with the BUILT-IN flash menu. You select WIRELESS FUNC. from that menu and you will see that you can choose EXT:POPUP or EXTERNAL only or EXT+POPUP. After you chose one of these options you decide if you want the slaves in eTTL or manual and the appropriate control choices will appear.
If there is not a compatible flash in the hotshoe of the camera, the EXTERNAL menu will always display INCOMPATIBLE FLASH or NO POWER.
Hope this helps.

OK. The external flash menu is for the flash only in hot shoe, I see that now... but I still didn't manage to remotely access the flash settings in the built in flash menu. A guy here at work knows and he will show me tomorrow. Thanks for the help guys.

OK, got it. You have to set the built in flash menu to Manual to get the manual control of the groups...Darn, why did I miss that one :| OK, its all good. So, will probably need my remote triggers anyway if I need the in built flash, from within a hide, to trigger.... :|

Yes, unlike Nikon's CLS, Canon's remote flash system always uses all flashes in the same mode. You either use E-TTL for all of them, or manual for all of them. Master included.

Well, you can use E-TTL and set a slave to manual independently, but then you can't control it from the master any longer.

I have one question.
I want to go wireless with 7D and 430EX II.
There are 3 options:

  • POPUP
  • EXTERNAL only
  • EXT+POPUP
But if I choose the option "EXTERNAL only", the built in flash also fires.
Why?

In eiher cases, "EXTERNAL only" or "EXT+POPUP", both flashes (430 and built in) fire..
What am I missing here?

The built-in flash communicates with the slave unit(s) by firing. It won't fire for the exposure if you've selected "external only".
