It looks great Tif. You look so much like your Mom in that gif

I'm thinking that is Lisa. Maybe Heather needs to rest her weary head. :)

To late. No more Oprah. I think... didn't her show end or is that later?

She's got one more season on CBS...

She's covering the behind-the-scenes of her last CBS season on her network...

Your right, I saw that. It's OWN for Oprah Winfrey Network. Somehow I don't think it will be on my favorites list.

It's sure not going to be on mine...

That is what I get for trying to catch up at work. Hopefully will be off soon, and I think it will be a hot bath to warm up (it started raining about 5) and some nyquil, then finding my pillow.

Night All.

I've got dinner keeping warm in the oven for you...

Lonnie you'll like this. We ran up to Redrock late this afternoon after the snow started coming down. I love snow in the desert, it's like yin and yang, like chocolate and peanut butter, like ebony and ivory well you get the idea.

They're nothing special just something to share.

Yeah, that.

Here's a story that will build confidence in the education system of my generation:

I was stationed on a Coast Guard Cutter that was patrolling the West Coast, off of San Francisco... I think it was about 1985 or 1986. Straight out of the Golden Gate, there is a small grouping of islands called the Farallon Islands. Uninhabited except for sea lions, gulls and the occasional Great White Shark stopping in for a quick meal.

Anyway, we were abeam of these islands, they were just off the horizon. Really, it's just a jumble of rocks, not much to look at.

Setting the scene: I was on the bridge, the Quartermaster of the Watch. There was this new kid, straight out of Boot Camp, standing the helm watch. He was so gullible it hurt.

Me: Wow, look. Those are the Farallons.
Helmsman: Really? What's so special about those?
M: Are you kidding me? Don't you remember a couple of years ago? That big dust up between Argentina and the UK? Right here. The Farallon Islands.
H: What?! I thought that was... I don't know, off of South America or something.
M: A lot of people thought that because of the Argentine angle, but no, right here.
H: Wasn't Argentina making a claim on those islands even though they belonged to the UK?
M: Ah, see? You remember. Yeah, that was the gist of it.
H: So these islands belong to England?! It's so close to the US.
(At this point I show the kid the chart. On this chart, the Farallon Islands are surrounded with a bunch of warnings and perimeter lines due to its being a Natural and Wildlife Preserve)
M: Yeah, see all these lines? They mark the international boundary. We can't get closer to those islands because they're protected under British sovereignty.
H: That's crazy! Didn't we get all that with the Declaration of Independence?
M: Uh... no. The British used these islands as whaling outposts for years before California was even a state. We didn't want them, so we just let them keep 'em.
H: I don't get it, then. If the UK owns these islands, then why did Argentina want them? It's so far away from their country. What made them think they even had a chance at the claim?
M: The UK hasn't really used these islands for over a century. Remember, it was a whaling station. Whaling hasn't really been a booming business for a while now. Argentina wanted the islands for the fishing rights. Argentines are big fish eaters.
H: Wow, so all those battles were happening right off the coast of California? That's crazy!
M: Yeah, that's why it was all over the news. I mean, if it were to happen off the coast of Argentina, we'd probably never hear about it, right?
H: Yeah, good point.

I often wonder if that kid ever figured it out or not.

*skippable post*

New Years.

Wow. I remember thinking back in April that this year was taking FOREVER. Then May hit, then it was mid-December. Pretty much like that. The year 2010 had a bunch of low points and a bunch of high points for me. Quite the roller coaster year. Some of you in this little community called TPBM had more of a roller coaster (like the kind that spin you like you were a part of some washing machine from hell) and some of you didn't have much of a ride at all (like a road trip from Fresno to Bakersfield). Next year might be different. A year from now, I may be looking back on 2011 with a wistful smile on my face, or I could be thankful that it's finally over. It's always a crap shoot.

I know that I wish that 2010 was much difficult for some of you. There have been deaths, illnesses and struggles. Some stuff that I hope I never have to face. Things that take much more than a year to subdue. I wish I could change that for you. I honestly do.

Then there are those of you that come out of 2010 with a winning record. More ups than downs. Happy news found you more often than not. When I hear of your blessings, I celebrate with you. We all could use a break and a little sunshine.

Here's my wish list for 2011:
  • Zane: I wish your health improves drastically. I wish you and Leyla the best year ever in your newly bonded marriage.
  • Lisa: I wish you love. I wish that you come to realize how much you are loved every minute of every day. And not just by me.
  • Crissa: Always the best. I really want you and your family to land in a house that is a home for you guys. The right place at the right time.
  • Cat: Every dog has a home. I wish you find those Starfish Connections all year long. And in the process, you don't lose what makes you special to all of us.
  • Terri: I wish you every shade of purple in every aspect of your life. I don't even know what that means, but I'm very sincere about it.
  • Harm: I wish you the ability to speak American. No, I wish you and your wife joy and a strengthened relationship.
  • Jim: Honestly, Jim, I wish you never lose your youth, even as you age chronologically. It's like you're a puppy in a grey world.
  • Wool: May 2011 end with you breaking your personal record of laughs. It's been a hard year for you, may Time bring laughter.
  • Jenn!!!!: For you, I really wish contentment. A solidity in your core that is unshakeable.
  • Becky: A continued strengthening of your family, in every generation.
  • Lonnie: I wish that your hobbies continue to fascinate you and that you keep the passion you now have.
  • Pea: I wish you joy. Not just happiness, but joy. There's a world of difference in that.
  • Neil: You are surrounded by beauty and blessings, it's hard to find something that I could wish for you. If anything, I would wish you a stress free year.
  • Omar: I don't know you at all, but you've joined this little group. I wish you many happy returns of your efforts in 2011.
  • John: I would really wish you to find this new year the hardest ever to find anything to be grumpy or obnoxious about.
  • Chief: Hard year. Actually, a hard couple few years. I wish that 2011 finds that pendulum to swing the other way for you. Also, I wish that you come to grips with the fact that we all love you.
  • Chet: May your family grow closer together, may the joys of the family far outweigh the sorrows and may the authorities never find what you buried in your basement.
  • T.D.: Truly, I wish that everything you touch in photography turns into gold. I'd love to see your photography really take off in 2011.
  • Deb: I wish you good health, for you, for your family and for your beloved dogs.
  • Heather: I wish your passions to guide you. That you have more "Me" moments in 2011.
  • Di: In a chaotic world, I wish you a sense of "belongedness". That's not in the dictionary, but it should be.
  • Sid: May you have all the hats your heart desires. And may you have peace when doing so many peaceful duties.
  • Jon: As your retirement looms on the horizon, I wish that you and Ann find happiness in making plans!
  • Jay: May you never tire of your gifts. May you always find the perfect shot.
Resolutions:
  • Breathe in. Breathe out. Move on.
  • Separate the needs from the wants, but don't forsake the wants altogether.
  • Notice the heart behind the face.
  • Find the true need in others and meet that need.
  • Grace without measure. Mercy beyond understanding. Truth robed in love.
Happy New Year to all of you, my dear friends.

Thank you Dan!!!! Much love to this thread and my friends here!!!!

I saw where AAA is offering their "Tipsy Tow" services again for the New Year celebrants. I think that's great. So great, in fact, that I think next year I will offer a similar service.

For the Changing of the Year twelve months from now, I will come to your party and take pictures of your über drunk friends FOR FREE. No matter where they are. On your Mom's couch, in the gutter outside the Coppergut Sports Bar, behind the 7-Eleven, wherever. You pay only for my transportation to the event, and I will take quality shots of your inebriated pals and post them on Facebook, local papers and the church bulletin for no extra charge.

It's my way of giving back to the community.

As promised, I slept through it. We got home from the restaurant at about 10:00. By 10:30, I was sound asleep. I woke up at 12:30, and tended to the two 'important' traditions that Lois considers very important:
1. The first person to enter the house has to be male. I checked to make sure I met the gender requirement, wandered outside, stood on the front walk for a minute to see if 2011 smelled any different, then came back in.
2. The first food consumed has to be seafood. I had scallops for dinner, but that was last year. Lois' mom used to make some sort of brown 'glop' from tuna that she served on crackers. To me, it tasted much as it looked, and I wasn't sure wasn't going there, so I purchased some jumbo shrimp instead and had a couple of those with cocktail sauce.

Once the obligatory New Years rituals were out of the way, I climbed into bed and had weird dreams all night.

I wish you all Happy New Year.

My resolutions for 2011: Reach 39,000 posts, build a model railroad, take some pictures, lose some more weight, and ummmm, let me see......

Oh!!! Quit smoking****

(Acutally, I haven't smoke for about 30 years, but I thought I'd throw one in that I actually have a chance of achieving.)

Thanks for your nice thoughts, Dan. As always, you show a charm, sensitivity, and uncanny insight that sometimes gets hidden in the silliness. You are definitely one of the stronger components of the glue that holds this place together. I am profoundly happy to know you are my friend.

Ta ta, all. Check you later.

Interesting traditions Chief!

Hi, Mark!!

One of these times I gotta get over to Newquay and celebrate the New Year with you guys!

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahhahahaha

Happy New Year everyone. I was in Concord for the weekend.

My new year started out pretty nice with a belated Christmas with friends and then a new years celebration....

We hit a bump in the road today when I got a call that our dear family friend was found dead in his home this afternoon.... Ian has been a part of our holidays (Thanksgiving/Christmas and often various other holidays through the year but always the first two) for more than 10 years.... Ian was a part of our family.

We had a wonderful Christmas Eve with him and I got a lovely email Christmas day from him. He apparently called in sick to work Thursday.... and when he didn't show up for work today, his supervisor contacted his emergency contact.

Long story short... he was found this afternoon in his home... :( Ian had virtually no family but us and another 'foster' family who loved him as much as we do.... (they were his emergency contact for work). His parents both died when he was young... his mom of cancer when he was only 9 years old... and his dad when Ian was in his late 20's/early 30's of a stroke... So my family and the Hensley's were his family... he spent all major holidays with us and them... If his sister can't be found in 10 days... the Hensley's will claim his body and we will go from there with his final wishes... or rather what we knew of what he wanted... He would have turned 46 on January 27th... :(

It's been a hard day... and I return to work tomorrow after almost 2 weeks off for the holidays. So I bid you good night and will finish catching up tomorrow...

Two more accomplishments this evening. Bought Photo Shop CS5 and I'm uploading the wedding pictures.

Wonder if Chris will hold an entire workshop with the Fish regarding work flow and PS tips? I'd sign up.
