First of all, my name is ivan and i was directed to this site by tyc photography for being one of the best/friendly forums.(specially for this rookie :D) I purchased my first slr last year hoping to learn lots of things, but i never actually learned much other than trial and error with the camera. I recently sold my xsi with the kit i had and im in the market for a new/better one that does video and stills.

With that said, i have read here for about 2 week, read some magazines and went to 3 local major camera stores to see for myself. Originally my plan was to purchase the new 60d along with the 24-105l lens. But after talking to the stores they all told me the 60d would struggle zooming in and out for what i will be doing??

my main purpose would be drag racing, family and what not. I know they want me to buy the 7d, but i dont want because i got a project car to finish. SO my main question would be is it really a big difference? i know the 7d is a much better camera but some of the videos on youtube seemed to have that lag (autofocus) with moving objects??

this is what im/was shooting for.

60d
24-105 lens only one i can afford
rode microphone
lite panels light (wasn't impressed with them at the store)
clik elite chest bag (bought the wrong one instead of the medium 1) vmadvmad
32gb 10x card

i know some of you nay be tired of these threads but id rather ask and not regret it for that kind of money. any advanced suggestion is much appreciate it

This is just an idea of what ill be doing. feel free to criticize :D

I think you'd be ok with the 60D. You still have a lot to learn, so just read read read. My advice as far as your purchase--skip the rode mic and wait until you can get a zoom h4n or external recorder and get a mic then. Put the money towards better glass--as far as what lens you should get--you should try and rent/borrow/observe and see what will be the best fit for what you are trying to shoot.

You may want something like a 70-200 for the drags... the 4L is a cheap starter lens, but you should probably get something with IS if you're going to be hand held or shoot from a vheicle

Hey great shots Ivan!1 and 2 may favs.I woulda said just keep using what you had, if it works don't fix it ya know, and it was workin mighty fine for you, but since there gone guess you need to re-fuel your camera kit (pun intended) Yeah seems like 7D would be best for your style, but if you don't have that much coin, how about the T2i?I have one and a 5DmkII, and I actually like the T2i better for various reasons.Great little video cam too.

thanks for the quick reply. but i thought the 24-105 is IS? http://www.bhphotovideo.com …24_105mm_f_4L_IS_USM.html (external link)

well i sure will miss the 55-250, but i cant afford one small lens and another longer range one. this is kind of in between and i hope it will be good for my needs. the tracks lets me get pretty close the the staging lanes so the longer range wont really concern me much.

thanks. only reason why i sold it was because my other 2 video cameras broke. and to be honest i was sick of carrying a big ass bag with 2 video cameras and the xsi with all the gear.

Are you going to be shooting mostly still shots or video with the camera? I'm a little confused about what you mean by the 60D not being capable of zooming in and out fast enough. The zoom is a function of twisting the zoom ring on the lens, not anything the camera does. If you are referring to Auto Focus speed then the 7D is probably going to be quicker than the 60D in that regard but I seriously doubt that the 60D would be too slow to handle what you are looking to do. I know in the Motorsports section of this forum there are a lot of good shots taken by older bodies that have much less sophisticated AF systems than the 60D. AF speed also depends on the lens you are using as well. I have the 24-105 and it does focus fairly quickly.

yes i was reffering to the auto focus speed of it.i watched videos on youtube and they both seemed to have it there. and yes i will be shooting both video and still, well not at the same time

what i wanted to hear was from you guys IF its that big of a difference to this rookie? the stores can tell me all they want but i rather hear it from the people that had the experiences with it

From everything I have seen the 7D has the most advanced AF system Canon makes besides the 1D4, so the 7D will certainly have you covered there. With the 60D being as new as it is you might have trouble finding people that have used both the 60D and 7D for motorsports. My hunch is still that the 60D can handle it. The photographer will always have a lot to do with the equation as well.

I'm not sure if you have come across this with using video but no current Canon DSLR has continuous AF during video. For moving subjects this will make manual focus necessary. This will make using a DSLR a different proposition than the video cameras that you are used to. I have only used the video on my 7D for static subjects.

Thanks for that tip. I'll defenetly keep that in mind.

Now I'm between the 60d and the 7d.

One more question which I searched and nothing came up.

Has anyone here ever dealt with bpe?

Their rating on resllerratings.com over the last six months is 9.18/10 so their rating is fairly high. However, when you look at the number of reviews over six months it's 95, and the lifetime number is 98 so it looks like they have not been in business very long. The most-often used stores by a lot of members are Adorama and B&H (assuming you are in the US). I usually buy from Adorama if I'm not buying at my local store.

I just looked at that site though and they are offering a 7D (body only) for $1,285 or $1,219 (two listings) which is a ridiculously low price, almost everywhere else is $1,599 with a $100 rebate. A price this low is usually a sign of something that's not on the up and up. Personally I wouldn't buy there, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. The typical scam is they call you up after you order and then tell you that you have to pay ridiculous prices for a battery or some other item that is supposed to come with the body.

^^^ You will be glad you took the time to save up, the 7D is an awesome camera. You may be able to avoid sales tax if you order from Adorama or B&H, though some states are clamping down on the internet thing. Also, those places may be offering free shipping as well. I have had great experience with Adorama.

I bought my first DSLR and lens locally from a camera store that has been in business for decades. The price matched the cheapest I could get anywhere. I considered the sales tax as pre-paying for assistance in case there was ever a problem or I simply needed advice. A positive relationship with a good local store might be invaluable in the future.
