I just got mine .
I posted shots at
http://forums.dpreview.com …rum=1029&message=37192637 (external link)
It is easier to post shots there . If you want to see the shots for quality / difference from 2X II . The shots were hand held . I bought on impulse so was not ready with a tripod . I was just looking for a focus chart and info on same subject .

Do you have previous versions to do a comparison?

I tried to focus on the center of shot picture , in this case the center of leaf . One shot center focus
I was bracing myself against the rear of my blazer .
My knees were hurting and it had drizzled off and on all day .
A lot of posts were asking about the quality of the 2X III and if it was worth it .
I can also say adding the 2X III almost turns the setup into a must for 2 hands / tripod / monopod .
--
All the shots were hand held and quite honestly , the 7D is not set up the way I want yet .
I have since added / put back my UV on lens .
--
I know how stupid / dumb it is to do tests on a new camera / lens that are not familiar to me and not on a tripod .
--
I bought the 2X III on impulse , I went in looking for a used 100-400 and or 2X II , info on my life size converter [It does not work in auto on 70-200 .] I was at used store / section - go across street .
I also wanted a product sheet on the 2X II and the 2X III to compare . I had 3 hours to kill and sometimes I just listen to peoples questions at counter .
Anyway they had just come in , - people have had orders cancelled on amazon and Adorama does / did not know when they were coming in . I though - you want it , they have it and there is a chance they will run out and it will be March or April before they are in stock again .

Anyone know what the difference between the MKII and MKIII are?

I believe it to be a question of resolution and this will only be apparent with the new primess (and maybe the 70-200 II). But we can hope for better bokeh right?

Id LOVE to see some shots with the 2X III and the 70-200 2.8 IS II combo! If they are great enough, Id probably sell my 100-400L to buy the 1.4X III AND 2X III TCs!

I'd like to see some images posted here. Imo the images are bit too small to judge on DP.

Sorry , I only have the 35-350 and it kind of sucks over 300mm .
I will try to get out and shoot a couple of shots , but probably won't be today .
There are a couple of samples posted here
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=37192637 (external link)
It seems they were not good enough for most people .
All were focused in the senter of shot , but may have moved . I was standing in a busy street and bracing myself against the car .
Just reread - no , I don't have the 2X I or 2XII . Just the life size converter and it only works in manual .

For those of us who Don't want the new EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and/or the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM, the mkII extenders are as good as we need?

I've had my 70-200 f2.8 L mkII 3 weeks now, and per the Canon info I won't really see additional improvememts?

Image Quality
There are two significant improvements related to image quality when using the new Series III Extenders with the new IS II super-telephoto lenses:
Anomalous dispersion glass elements are used in both new extenders to effectively reduce chromatic aberration to the greatest possible extent. This results in higher resolution and contrast, especially when the new extenders are used with IS II super-telephoto lenses.

Each Series III Extender features a newly developed microcomputer that increases AF precision when the extenders are used with an IS II super-telephoto lens. AF precision remains the same as the Series II Extenders when the Series III Extenders are used with earlier extender-compatible EF lenses.
As a result of these improvements, users of the new IS II super-telephoto lenses can expect significantly improved image quality when using Series III Extenders.
New Lens Coating
The front and rear elements of both Series III Extenders feature Canon’s new Fluorine anti-smear coating. The new coating is extremely oil-and water-repellent so that the front and rear elements can be cleaned without lens cleaning solvents using a soft, dry cloth.
Durability Improvements
The Series III Extenders are significantly more durable than earlier models due to the following improvements:
Seven screws instead of four are used to attach the lens mount to the body of the extender.

The lens lock pin and lens mount stopper pin have been improved for higher endurance.
The Series III Extenders are equivalent to the Series II Extenders in terms of weather resistance, with gaskets on both the front and rear lens mounts as well as the lens mount release switch.
The durability improvements of the Series III EF Extenders were made in response to feedback from professional photographers who use EF super-telephoto lenses and extenders regularly in their daily work.

So, maybe-possibly, CA for other lens will be slightly improved?
Key point is will the diff be noticiable or not.....gotta get those reviews....

From 7 to 9 elements and fluoride coating should make some difference.

Will have mine, hopefully, tomorrow to test with the Canon 400mm 5.6 and the 600mm f4

I hope people won't drop $500 for it in the hope that AF, image quality, and bokeh performances won't get degraded as if it would on the markII version. Then, I see no points in using a 2x converter.
