You can still use the same name if you like, a few dollars at a lawyer can fix that up.

As mentioned above you could rebrand, it's up to you.

Nice thing about owning your own business, you get to make the decisions!

I knew the answer I was going to get and started not to post because it sounded like a really dumb question. Thank you any way for taking the time to confirm.

It depends on how big you get by the time you change your name. If you are still in start up mode it is kind of easy to change the name. If you get big right away. It would not be worth changing the name. There is nothing wrong in keeping the name for the business the same and not changing it. You may have to do the " I got married (or other reason)" thing for a while. But in short the customer does not really care. They are buying your skill not your name.

So you are saying people buy Apple simply because they have a cute name? Rather than because they have the skill to design and manufacture a superior product?

You don't have to do anything. You don't have to change the name of your business.

I have a Blu-ray player. It's not an Apple, mind you, but it's shinier than it is "good." I fell for the capacitive touch buttons (as opposed to most devices' mechanical buttons) and sleek design. Operationally, it's glitchy. It's not HORRIBLE, but the looks defy the operation.

I think Apple products are the same. Riding the name, industrial design (they do produce sexy looking stuff), and promotion more than the product's functionality.

I totally agree they consistantly promote way beyond what they can deliver. But they make solid equipment. And that is the reputation that people buy it for. Not because of the cute name.

I think there are more people buying the name than there are people buying after heavy research. I mean, they're getting an iPhone because they want an iPhone despite being on a less than ideal network with a significant data limit. The reason they want the iPhone is they were told to want the iPhone. That doesn't mean it's total crap, but it's not really as great as it's marketed to be, as you acknowledged.

I get your point now. I was thinking specifically, only the name. Not the reputation behind the name. Your right. "They " say to get one, so people do. But then again, "they" wont say to buy it, if it is crap. Over promoted? You bet it is. But it is far from junk. Crippled by a business pertner? Absolutley. But again that is not the products fault.
