I said just curious, and when shooting ETTL. I shoot manual flash setting often enough, that I have a good idea how to set those up with different modifiers, especially in controlled environments, and in manual modes I know exactly how much power I'm asking out of my speedlites. But, when shooting outdoors, or in odd environments, and using ETTL, I've pushed beyond the limits of the flash. HSS modes come to mind as well. Would be nice to peek at it to see I was close, or at the limits, and if the power was displayed on the back of the camera, I'd find it somewhat useful. Setting up tests, in a controlled environment wouldn't help at all. And, just a curiosity, not highest on my list of feature requests.

The Canon flash should display max distance for the currently set aperture, zoom head setting and ISO (and shutter speed, when HSS). That would let you know how far the flash would be effective to.

And they do (at least on the 430EX and higher models) as long as the flash head is pointed directly forward.
