That's what I'd call a surprise:

- 10.8 MP on an APS-C size sensor (same size as 20D - that's why I posted it in this forum  ),
- fixed Carl Zeiss 24-120/2.8-4.8 lens,
- Size similar to F828
- price tag of $ 999
- ISO 160 - 3200
- EVF only, live preview with large swivel LCD
- ISO visible in EVF (so Sony listens to the forum, if not Canon  )
- Takes CF (and MemoryStick  )

That might be interesting for someone who's looking for a compact camera with a large sensor...

Take a look at the preview at DPReview

Best regards,

Its still a Sony.
I would buy another TV, or playstation from them, but Iv used enough of thier Digicams, and own enough of thier electronic equipment to know I would never buy a Camera from them.

What's wrong with your Sony Digicams? (No, I don't have one but I'm interested to know.)

It's not only still a Sony, it's still a digicam - impossible to change lenses and it has an electronic viewfinder, which is inferior to an optical viewfinder.

It's also not really a compact camera, because it's significantly bigger and heavier than the DRebel XT and Nikon D50.

And one really big reason why I would never buy a Sony is that their RAW file format is encrypted, so that you can only use the software from Sony to convert your RAW files. That's one of those typical stubborn Sony ideas - they like to make proprietary stuff. The Sony memory stick is another example - why in the world did they invent their own kind of memory card while there were already better standards available (SD and CF)??

So ok, a digicam with an APS-C sensor is a nice idea, but it's not as hot as it may sound.

In part, I disagree with you

You are right ... I would not buy it, because the fixed lens is quite limiting and I also never used the LCD on my G2 ... and abhor EVFs.

BUT ... it's the first digicam with a large sensor, and it shows that this market segment might also go into the right direction.

I think that it will be a valid alternative for the a lot of people ... maybe the kind of people who bought an Olympus E10 or E20 or NOINK 5700 before... all-in-one, compact size, decent image quality and - for the first time in a digicam - the possibility to really control DOF in a way similar to a DSLR.

Best regards,
Andy

I can definitely see a market for it too...

I can't tell you how many times I have recomended Fuji or Minota EVF cameras.. (and now Canon pro1) but never had a good solution for those wanting one for indoor low light shooting.

If logic and physics remain consistent.. this should have the best hi ISO performance of any Digicam. ISO 3200? Most Digicam,s top off at 400 or at best 800.

I'm still interested in the coming Fuji E900...

This is great news!!! The prosumer and entry level SLR camera has such a huge gap when it comes to image quality - and this closes that gap. I've always dreamed of a G series camera with a larger sensor...............Now my dream is closer to reality. Just imagine a lightweight travel camera that produces the same low noise/better background blur found on the 20D...........I think its genius!!!

If Sony sells a lot of these, Canon may have a similar camera soon - perhaps the G7 or G8?

Did you see the table on this dpreview.com page (external link)? It is larger and heavier than the entry-level DSLRs with kit lens.

350D + kit lens: 1.6 lb / 724 g
Nikon D50 + kit lens: 1.8 lb / 828 g
Sony DSC-R1: 2.2 lb / 995 g

It's fine for someone to dismiss a camera like the Sony for personal reasons, but one shouldn't ignore it because this camera can be considered as a disruptive technology (external link). Healthy competition is good, but competition that transforms the market could spell disaster for the incumbent. If the masses embrace features like live LCD preview, then we old-fashioned SLR users ought to be concerned about the future of the SLR.

I thought this was the Canon EOS digital forum, not the Sony forum.
