Are EOS camera susceptable to E18 type errors

I had a Canon A70 compact which I thought was a great little camera until I got the dreaded E18 error. I kind of lost faith in Canon after reading up on the web about it.

I've since bought a Fuji S5500 which is another great camera but I'd like to upgrade to a Digital SLR at some stage, which leads me back to Canon. I like the spec of the 20D, but I'm wary of buying another Canon that'll go belly up after a year.

I know that problem only affects the A range of cameras but is this kind of thing likely in the EOS range? Can I be assured that I'm buying a solid, stable camera?

Thanks!

Since the EOS cameras don't come with any type of lens attached permanently, they won't suffer the dreaded E18 error that the smaller P&S Canons do. From what I understand of the E18 error, it occurs when there is something that inhibits the extension and opening of the lens assembly. There is no such operation that occurs on the EOS cameras.

Thanks.

I guess my question goes beyond that though. Are there any (common?) problems with EOS camera bodies that cause them to become unusable as in the case of the E18 error?
Am I right to be so suspicious after my experience with the A70?

Thanks again.

I have the G3, the 1Dmk2 and the 10D and none of these cameras have given me any problems. I've also had a bunch of Canon film SLR cameras and they never gave me any problems either.

However, I do understand where you are coming from because I bought my daughter an A70 and it suffered the same E18 fate. She now has an a510. Hopefully it'll last longer than her A70 did. I also bought my wife's nephew an A400 for his graduation last June. It didn't even last through the summer before becoming an expensive paper weight due to the E18 error. What I did notice is that these A series cameras do not take abuses, especially jarring to the lens assembly area, very well and hence the E18 error.

I just bought the S2 IS so I'm hoping it's built more like the G3 than the A-series cameras.

My A80's suffered several falls onto hard surfaces (including one from 4+ ft) without giving me an E18 or other related error. The top cover's taped down because it sprung after one of the falls, but although it just rattles around in my backpack or wherever, it's still going strong.
