I noticed Matthew playing guitar by the tree the other day. I was goofing off taking pictures of the lights behind him when it occurred to me that he was actually the better subject. :)

When he was finished playing, he sat still for a few moments for me to get a couple of snaps. I want to take more photos of him later with his guitar - anyone have some good location/pose ideas?

Athena, I really like this photo, especially in color. I would have liked to see just a little bit more of the guitar because I didn't realize that was what it was until I read your post. However, it is a great photo capturing an age that is very difficult to get a natural expression from. You have great catchlights in his eyes, which have stayed large and retained their beautiful shape because his smile was so subtle. His eye color is showing nicely, a rich chestnut color. There is a rembrant light pattern on his face, I love his hands curving into the guitar. The love the jaunty santa cap that typically only a kid can pull off naturally and without awkwardness. This is a great shot.

Thanks Sue. I SO agree with you on the guitar. I actually took the first photo including the whole thing, but then found myself drawn into this face. I'm very lucky that he gives these great smiles, often quite subtle and believable. He was actually already there by the tree wearing that hat when I came in, so most of the credit goes to him. :)

I'd love to do some more guitar themed shots with him in the future. Do you have any suggestions for me?
