I have posted a few pictures i took the other day of the kids sled riding.

To maintain full resolution I have provided the flickr link below

http://www.flickr.com …/5469058...746106/detail/ (external link)

When I review these in Lightroom 3, it shows various info for each picture. For instance, ISO range of 200-400. Shutter speed betweeen 1/320 and 1/500. And aperture of between f/5.6 and f/22.

Can someone help me decipher what these all mean? Why is aperture so high on some shots?

I was using a Canon 20d with the 17-40 L lens.

Thx so much for the help

The aperture is smaller ("higher") because you have the camera in Program Auto Exposure mode. This mode allows the camera to use information from its meter to automatically adjust Aperture and Shutter Speed to what it thinks is an optimal exposure. In most instances, and certainly when shooting snow, this exposure will be incorrect.

The linked photos are all underexposed. You need to adjust the shutter speed manually to get it correctly exposed.

Thx for the help - so when shooting outside with snow i should go manual focus and lower the aperrture and adjust shutter speed - what settings would work best

I think you mean manual exposure. Although I use manual exposure for about 95% of my photos that's not the only approach. You can also use the Aperture Priority mode.

The key to understanding exposure is that the camera's meter assumes any subject is 18% grey and calculates exposures to yield a grey result. Consequently you want to slow the shutter speed to allow more light to hit the sensor. (A fast shutter speed means less light reaches the sensor, so white will look grey. To get true white you need to use a slower shutter speed). Take a look at the exposure meter in your camera; if I recall correctly its at the bottom of the viewfinder. To get white the needle shoot be at least 1EV to the right of the center of the meter.

So use either Manual Exposure or Aperture Priority to set the aperture you want as part of your creative decision (blur, etc). Then set a shutter speed to make the snow white by looking at your camera's exposure meter.

Did you shoot Raw? If jpeg they can still be fixed but it would involve more work.

Then it should be simple. They look to be about 1 stop underexposed so bump up the Exposure Slider by +1. Then set the White Balance and increase the Blacks slider. After that any other adjustments are simply up to your tastes.

I don't see that anyone recommended changing the Exposure Compensation. Shooting in Manual mode is fine, but hard to change on the fly to account for changing conditions, particularly if your new to this. I recommend shooting in Av or Tv (if you want to get a fast shutter speed to prevent blur, as you probably do in this case, use Tv), and bumping up your exposure compensation (see p. 83 of your manual). As noted above, the camera thinks its done exposing the image when it reaches the 18% gray standard, leaving you with underexposed snow. Upping the exposure compensation will tell the camera to "overexpose" the image. You'll need to tinker with it to get the right amount, but it's no more work than setting your manual mode.

just remember to set it back to zero when you're done.

If you have them posted somewhere else is a breeze to include them here as well just click on the little icon in the posting window of the mountain scene. Paste the link inside and you are done.
